    Just got back from these 2 countries and fell in love with their elephants - smaller than their African cousins and only the males have tusks in Asia.
    We went to see these at a nearby town. All finely dressed for the celebration of the arrival of Spring and the new growing season. About 2000 people there - couldn't see any other white persons. I love that - the feeling of knowing that you've stumbled across something very special.

    With their keepers . A Mahout will bond with an elephant soon after weaning and they remain together for life - maybe 40 years or more.

    it was a noisy ceremony with the constant slow beat of big base drums and a chant by trumpeters that was repeated all the time and I found myself swaying hypnotically along with the elephants!

    In Nepal, at a Game Reserve in Chitwan, we visited an Elephant breeding Centre. The male on the left is wild and untethered. He has come to check on his girls. He is allowed to mate as he produces good offspring but it is a risk to stand this close as he is unchained and could join us if he felt like it and our guide was not happy. Couldn't resist a piccie though

    At the elephant taxi rank at 7am.We are off to watch the early grazers in the jungle - saw deer, bison and a sloth bear.

    And this is Chuckaly who carried us. A gentle 39 year old lady who placed her trunk over her head so that I could pat it when I called her by name. She had some head makeup on so I think she'd been to the Spring festival too.
