I don't like to gorge on meat but when I do eat it, it has to be good. Our local butcher ( in the" best of British Butcher "final round) , has local Rose veal for sale.
So, yesterday as a treat, we had 2 medallions flattened out to make Veal schnitzels . I couldn't believe the price when the butcher put them on the scales !!
:thud:. I paid the going rate (must have been in temporary shock) and cooked them as per the recipe. Meat was tender but had no flavour at all.
Both Adam Henson (Countryfile ) and Jimmy Doherty are banging on about the cruel waste of slaughtering young bull calves at birth and encouraging us to buy and eat Rose veal.
What ??? At £23.45 per kg? They've got to be joking. Why is it so expensive?
Any GC farmers able to advise me please,
    Jenny namaste

The farmers'll tell you that you don't get so much meat to the beast so it's dearer.
Reality will say that if you wait until the beast matures, although there's more of it, it will have cost a fortune to feed and maintain over the 2-3 years to full maturity.

The true tale is that the TV Chefs recommend a product and the Butchers make the buck where they can.
Currently the Hairy Bikers are talking up Lamb's liver over Ox, so Lamb's liver will go up in price.
Go for Shin Beef and cook it slowly. Great taste and (hopefully - unless your Butcher is reading this) a decent price.

    Pray,why do you ask?

I get most of my meat delivered, blast frozen, from a butcher that specialises in only free range stuff that is top quality - I was going to recommend them to you, however it might not be as easy with a smaller freezer?

Tiny kitchen and no room in the garage for a freezer. A great pity FC. The carriage costs would be prohibitive I think, but I'd love a browse. Can you PM the link to me please?

There are no carriage costs, that's the beauty of it. The idea is that you commit to a direct debit (I do £35 a month) which you can vary or top up as you see fit, and then place orders as and when you want; they deliver to your door (or the freezer, as they did for us yesterday) on a date of your choice and that is it.

You can let your balance build (we tend to build it for six months or so, then place an order), or you can go into a negative balance that is equivalent to 3x your chosen monthly payment.

    PM on its way.

In a field where I live ,there are Mums and their sucklings out in the field. I think these are young males and they look very happy and healthy to me. I am a meat eater and in my opinion you either eat up and shut up or go vegetarian,

Bit Harsh Gemini on Jenny , I dont like what happens either but look how we get milk eggs were do you draw the line , I know what happens to the cows at the end of the milking days , and what happens to the chickens I could go on ... at least she went for the better option of the two with rose veal.
