With the extra cold winter most of us have just experienced, has anyone lost plants that normally would survive the average British winter?

    Me, I've lost -
Canary Palm (I think - its looking very brown and dead)
Agapanthus. I finally checked the pot and its dead - very, very dead.
Diarama (sp?). Admittedly I was only given it last autumn and I understand its borderline hardy.

Apart from that, most stuff has survived, but a) we're down South and b) we only had one bad spell of snow, although lots of nights with the temperature dropping below zero and staying there during the day.

    Anyone else?

Nothing was lost nor wrapped up for winter silly me I take risks.

Although last year I 'thought' I lost a young Canary Palm it looked pretty much as I imagine yours does now all brown and kind of dried up, I was going to dig it up but instead I just cut it back and imagine my joy when it grew back worth a try I think Aaron if you want to see if yours will come back I mean I live in chilly Yorkshire and by heck it did get cold here this last winter.Hel.xxx.

I lost 38 out of 40 pelargonium cuttings which were in a client's (unheated) greenhouse. :( Also, and much worse, the ten lemon trees I persuaded him not to leave outdoors but put in a usually warm, smaller greenhouse, have lost their leaves and I don't hold out much hope for them. :help:
Luckily, he's not blaming me, although I do feel a bit guilty. I suppose I should have wrapped them in fleece but I was caught out, like many others I suspect, by the protracted spells of cold we had this winter.

I don't appear to have lost anything, but it's difficult to tell up here, the season starts a bit later.

And Chris-did I see you on a Gardeners World Chelsea flower show special, chatting with Our Carol??

Agapanthus & Acers all in pots, and about thirty Spider plants in the greenhouse:doh:at least I've replaced them with cuttings already but I'm loathe to spend out on more Acers.

Cant believe acers were killed by the cold Pal?

I've lost a few bit and pieces but nothing I cant replace, It was the kind of winter I had been expecting for a while now (dont believe in global warming as such), so I tend to keep a plant of anything I like under cover.

Aloe striatula died on me on the allotment but survived in the garden just a few degrees different in temperature made the difference.
My nanas are cut to the ground, but one plant that I was very unsure about, at minus 10C or lower, Fiejoa sellowiana, has sailed through untouched, I'm going to call that one hardy now.:)

Echiums have died, but that was to be expected.

Agapanthus are OK, but not in pots, anything that survived that in a pot is totally hardy IMO.:)

    Dead.
    Several Brugs.
    Lots of Fuschias (some Hardy:mad:)
All the Freesias that were in the ground.
Jasmine Officianale (supposed to be hardy)

Not too hacked off about it. Even down here we get the odd cold one. Most years we get away with it.
"Pick yourself up etc." I notice that the "Chinese Lanterns" have taken the opportunity to try to take over, not while I've got a S.B.K. spray in my hand, they won't:D

So far, I've not discovered anything that has died over the winter. Still have one or two things to wake up, but all the signs are good!

I'll keep you posted if things change!
