One of my neighbours has asked me for advice on their little eucalyptus. It is looking very ill and i was wondering if there was anything that effects them that could be causing the leaves to turn brown and die. I think it is just wind/cold damage. How hardy are they?

I grew a selection from seed last year and have 2 which are making good plants, going by the leaves they look possibly gunii and niphophila

I took them in the greenhouse (unheated) overwinter and brought them out again in april as they are tender when young but can tolerate more when older....I think you are correct in that wind and cold will brown the leaves like acers and also they prefer acid soil like acers

If its in a spot where wind is continually blowing on to it then I would say move it somewhere sheltered

I agree Steve, they can look pretty rough after winter especially when young, and some are hardier than others. But if its survived it will probably get going again, but it could be slow starting. Trouble is they dont acually go dormant like most plants, try to grow 12 months of the year, which is not possible here. so the shoots take a battering where the wood hasn't ripened.
