    Hi,
Does anyone know what's wrong with my Euonymus? The leaves have clearly been eaten by something but there's also lots of dead leaves on the floor underneath. It looks like there is some new growth budding but all the other Euonymus plants in the garden appear unaffected.
    Many thanks.

I would have said adult vine weevil but it seems the wrong time of the year for new leaf damage.

That was my first thought as well but as you said it's early for them.

Whether it is Vine Weevil or not (and you may not have noticed it from last year until now). It's not likely to affect a shrub that size. Euonymus especially Fortunei types will be fine and may just need a light prune in late spring to keep it in size of shaping. If you do see similar cuts again on newer growth or on other shrubs, especially neighbouring ones, then you do have a Vine Weevil problem and there is treatment for that if it's definitely that.

One of mine gets a euonymus scale infestation most years which weakens the plant which then gives an opportunity for other pests (e.g. vine weevil) to get in on the action and munch some leaves.

At this time of year the only sign of scale would be the tiny limpet-like scales which cover the eggs. Sometimes you'll see what looks like a tiny bit of cotton wool around them.
They do looks very similar to unopened buds, so not easy to spot until you get to know what you're looking for.

This is what they look like-

I'd go for Vine Weevil. It's pretty unmistakeable. Maybe they're becoming more resistant to winter weather as well as chemical treatments?

Have you noticed any caterpillars? There is a moth, I think it's the small ermine that likes to lay it's eggs on euonymus.

You could have two problems simultaneously there. The nibbling may be weevils, the leaf drop may be euomyous scale. If the latter is a factor, the leaf drop will get worse so keep an eye out for that.
