Now my pond is dug and ready for plants, a few questions to you experts...I looked in the garden centre for ideas but they didn't have much healthy looking stock esp for the price they wanted, lots weren't labelled and what was didn't have any info on, just that it was a water plant! :(

    1. Any ideas for evergreen plants most welcome, shallow & deep water please thankyou!

    2. Has anyone got willow moss, is it ok?

    3. This may sound daft but... how does the soil not float away if plant pot tops are covered? How can I make it NOT look like a load of potted plants in the shallow part of my pond?

HI JAY, IF YOU INTEND filling your pond with tap water you must leave it for 2 or 3 days to let the chlorines and other additives waste away, otherwise algae will take hold of your pond. it is essential to encourage bacterial life to get a balance.there are 4 basic aquatic plants you must have in your pond oxygenators lots of them, deepwater plants , marginals and floating plants, the best oxygenator is ELODEA CRISPA also known as curly pond weed, hornwort, myriophyllum spicatum(water milfoil),water violets, parrots feather, water crow foot.these are only some common oxygenators. deepwater aquatics- lillies. floating plants are fairy moss not so good in winter, water hyacinth and water lettuce not good in winter, water soldier(stratiotes aloides) it servives the winter by sinking to the bottom. marginals there are lots of these. water hawthorn, pride of the Thames, acorus gramineus(grassy yellow lanceolate leaves, water plataain, marsh marrigold, bog arum, bowls golden and the list goes on.jay I have given you something to start with. dont put fish in just yet let pond settle down.A gardner once told me when frogs enter your pond it is healthy. hope you find this info helpful. YOU NEED TO VISIT AN AQUATIC GARDEN CENTER, FANCY

Thanks Fancy, I'd read about the different plant types and reasons, I have a list of 'yes' and 'no' plants off this site :D The water has been in for a week on Saturday, tap & rain water mixed. I'm not having fish, just some snails perhaps, and of course I hope the frogs and birds will use it!
Your advice is much appreciated [IMG]
