Exotic fruit or at least exotic to the UK.

Got some flowers on my Pomegranate at the moment, not expecting any fruit though.

 

Is that because it needs a mate, or a special pollinators or just because of relatively short summers?

 

They are stunning trees in bloom, lots here, getting ready for the Holiday Season.

 

I think its just a fact we dont get long enough summers.

 

My Feijoas are very slow to flower this year, one is getting going now but the other is not doing much, and I need both, to pollinate each other.
Made quite a lot of wine last year with the glut of fruit I had, but I mixed it with other fruit, mostly figs or blackberry, yet to try it.

 

But do they set fruit in the first place? I've only got double ornamental ones here Can't stand pippy fruits!

 

Avocadoes, now, I'd love to be able to produce them. I had a plant donkey's years ago, raised from a stone, like you do..... But @Giri's got me wondering whether it would be worth a shot with a named variety in a container that I could protect in winter

 

They have done but they dont get very big, I dare say a different pollinator might make more fruit set, but I still dont think they would get very big.
I used to have a fairly large plant of the dwarf variety "nana" and the fruit used to pretty much all set, but never got bigger than a ping pong ball.

 

Avocados are yuck to me, just cant understand what anyone sees in eating them.
Mind you, the last time I tried one was back in the 70s when they were the new trendy thing to eat.

Psidium I tried a long time ago, but as usual just seed grown plants.
Not tried Carissa, are you going to get fruit this year?

 

Mmmm I tried most exotic fruits from seed....complete waste of time! High hopes...the Carissa opened it's first little, fluffy flower today

 

Thing is I was growing things like Psidium, 30 odd years ago, you just couldn't buy proper fruiting varieties in the UK back then, same with Feijoa.

I just liked trying them, it was something different to Brussel sprouts.

 

Chiltern Seeds were responsible for my attempts, then trips to India and not being able to resist sowing the seeds of fruit I tried there.
You could give Asiminier a go? They grow and fruit well in Germany, so why not UK?

 

On the subject of exotic fruits.....this is my 'dead' Ensete.....
