Some plants are grown for their showy flowers, some for foliage, others are worth growing just so that you can drop their name into conversation.
Fabiana imbricata Prostrata rolls beautifully off the tongue & sounds like a great night out; And just what was the fern doing before it was Interrupted :(

    Got any favourites?

Always feel sorry for younger gardeners who didn't learn latin at school!

I like the ones named after the finders [or more often their employers] It reminds me of all the effort that went into finding what are now garden favourites. Anything including Veitch, Lobb, Hooker, Henry, Tradescant.

I must admit to liking Mesembryanthemum and a new one to me this year, Zaluzianskya. Sounds like a very good swear word :D

Fabiana imbricata Prostrata sounds like it needs surgery! If you know what I mean.

I like the previously discussed 'Pachysandra Treminalis'. It sounds racially inflamatory in latin about a girl named sandra.   :D

Japanese plant names, probably mean quite sensible things in their language, but trip off the tongue engagingly in ours!
My favourite acer- Shirasawanum aureum [mind you this does translate well- full moon maple!]
My only bought bonsai, a chinese elm- Nire keyaki

I would be a bit wary about buying Circaea lutetiana 'Caveat Emptor'.

I think that if you have a Fuschia 'Crinkley Bottom' or even Iris 'Chubby Cheeks' you also need Fuschia 'Fancy Pants' if you want them to hang out in the company of Penstemon 'Modesty'. If you don't, you are likely to see the Lythrum 'Blush'. :D

When I started out at Rochfords all those years ago a couple of names were learnt to impress folk at the time cos they sounded good, Pedilanthus Tithymaloides and Tillandsia Usneoides. :D
Acanthophthalmus is a good one Rich for tropical fish, Kuhliis are easier to pronounce, I have two. [IMG]

What about the man on the Chelsea Show TV coverage who was offering 'Show Auricula' - when asked as to why a lot were named after ladies names he simply said that 'when someone asks for a particular name I tell them that I am very sorry but I shall have one next year' - a great way to boost his sales!
My favourite is the rather more mundane 'Agapanthus' dont ask me why I have no idea!
