Last year I had to sadly cut an oak tree down in the garden, but rather than just cut the stump off at ground level, I left it high and had some fun.

The following is my first attempt at wood carving.:)

The art work was done by my ten year old daughter, which then just left me to spoil her hard work!!

Whilst doing this, I managed to do something stupid! I work with wood and chisels everyday and have been accident free for over 20yrs, but stupidly managed to somehow cut my finger as I put one of the chisels down! Where's the superglue when you need it!

And here is the finished article.

:gnthb::yho: Oh now that is beautiful..! I can see you have an affinity for wood & trees... :thmb:  Although your pain was obviously great, it was worth it... What is the saying... No gain without pain.....
:thmb: You must tell your daughter her design is beautiful & Dad's handywork completed the job... I just love her design it is so delicate & befitting of the fairies.. To me & probably any passing fairy you cannot fail to be impressed...!!!! I think for any fairy, no matter how high ranking she would be impressed with you both..!!:hehe::thmb:

Many thanks.:) ChloeJ and myself spend hours outside making and doing things for the garden. The ultimate aim is to make the garden a place of fun, with hidden interest around every corner.
I haven't had time to do any carving since the above, but I am saving up old bent lengths of oak trunks in order to make a massive sea serpent that will arch in out of the ground across the lawn.

Here is another bit of fun that was made from wood that was being thrown away.

I loosely traced around ChloeJ, then using my own interpretation created this. Chloe calls it "Me Me"

    Thanks again for positive replies.:)

I hadn't even considered the fact that these were original ideas, not bought from a garden centre. I quite like that thought.:)

Well spotted BM, I had meant to say that the tree has now sprouted from the base. I'm going to use this to my advantage and keep it trimmed to one sucker, which will hopefully grow up to form a canopy over the seat. It can be a feature without me having to add any input.

It was a shame that the tree had to come down at all. But there had been a large dead Scotts pine behind it and one of the branches had rubbed through a main part of the oak tree. When we removed the Scotts pine, it suddenly became apparent that all the strength had gone from the oak tree and it had to come down as well.

Besides the seat, the tree has provided wood for the fire, another far more rustic figure, a bird table constructed by turning a branch upside down and sticking it in the ground, and finally this little rustic Rain deer that took all of 20mins to make last Xmas.:)

This was the offending weak point where the other tree had been rubbing.

Very impressive Eddie, lovely design and carving. As a sometime sculptor I thought you might like to see a piece I made for my garden. It's in the "dry" area - our own little piece of Winchelsea Beach!
