I saw this on another forum I use, and thought I'd pass it on. Its an example of bureaucracy gone mad, and it sounds like a local family business that people actually want is going to be closed and the premises turned into a tourist information centre. The plans sound a bit silly, not to mention ruthless, to me. See what you think.

I agree. My logic is this: As I'm not from that area, if I was to go there, I'd be a 'tourist'. As a tourist, after driving for hours I'd more likely to want a cup of tea than to read leaflets. Also, I don't see why they can't just combine the two. Whenever I've been away on leisure, I've never once called into a tourist information centre, but I have picked up leaflets about local attractions that I've found in cafes and bars. Besides, if you take away the local amenities, then there would be no tourists to go into the tourist centre, and even if they did, what would the tourist info centre tell them:

Tourist: Hi, can you tell me where I can get a cup of tea and a piece of cake to restore me after my long drive here please?
TIC Advisor: No sir I can't unfortunately, until recently you could have got that from here, as it used to be a cafe until we kicked them out.

Hi, well slightly off topic but the same sort of thing..... we were down south recently and went to a 'forest' area. There was a hut with videos showing, ponds with endangered species, walks etc but when we asked for a cup of tea or similar, we were told that it would 'cost more, mean more for them to keep it up (sorry I can't think of the word at the moment:( ) etc.

We could understand in a way, but I'm sure as you are saying, that it wouldn't cost that much - there would be volunteers. To take away something that is obviously encouraging & helping people is totally idiotic - but then ....look at councils, government etc...sorry. Will sign any petition that helps the 'small' people carry on.

    cheers
