Fast climber on south facing wall

Any ideas and advice on this would be gratefully recived!!!
I'm looking for a climber, vine of some type that is fast growing to cover a south facing wall in a sheltered location, the area in question gets very hot as its like a little sun trap, we are about 6 miles inland from the South Coast in Dorset.

Would a grape vine be possible??

We love gardening but as we are both still fairly new to this we are a little confused.com

fast growing specimens that spring to my mind are passifora caerulea or wisteria sinensis

 

Grapevines do grow like bejesus and they do like sun, so it should be possible.

 

Try a campsis, but it will need some support.
Grapevines will work and also need support, and quite a bit of attention if you want to harvest grapes.

 

Many thanks for the help all, thinking of trying a Russian vine on one of the small walls at the bottom of the garden but sounds like I will have to keep the secateurs sharp and at the ready at all times as the wall is only about 12ft long and 8ft high...........
I like the idea of a Grape Vine on the main south facing wall of the house (Not really bothered about if it will produce Grapes or not)
Also like the idea of wisteria which of these two is the fastest growing??

I understand when buying wisteria its best to buy a grafted plant is this the same for a grape vine???

 

A grape vine not grown to produce grapes?
There are a few ornamental ones, but I'd go for Wisteria before grape if thats your options.

Yes go for a grafted wisteria, if you go for grape it wont matter if you not looking for fruit.

Russian vine belongs in the junk yard really, good for covering eyesores that you never want to see again.

 

If you're not going for grape vine, you could try Jasminum officinale or one of the honeysuckles (which are very fast growing and some are evergreen). Both of these will give you fragrance as well, which is an added bonus.

You could also try the faster growing Clematis such as armandii or montana - again these are fragrant.

To give better coverage and a longer flowering season, why not plant two climbers at each end of the wall - one spring flowering and one summer flowering? Say Jasminum officinale with Clematis montana rubens.
