    Good afternoon all.

    What ideas can we come up with for fast grown veg that works well in containers?

    If not fast growing, then something that once established just keeps producing over a long period.

    Thins that I can think of are:

    * Lettuce / various salad leafs
    * Radish
    * Turnips (might not work in containers)

    There must be a gazillion other things. Ideas?

    Mangetout
    Sugar snaps
    French beans
    All grow well in containers and crop fairly quickly.

      I have a carrot variety designed for containers (this will be the 1st year I attempt them).

      Have grown tomatoes in containers.

      In the Summer you'd probably find that Chinese Cabbage is fast; there are a few others like that too - Pak Choi, Mazumna(sp?) and those sort of Chinese greens. Mooli radish is quick in Summer, and quite fun (the "root" grows half-in and half-out of the soil) but not sure how well it would get on in a [deep] container?

        French beans, both dwarf and climbing varieties - try the purple podded ones such as Purple Queen (Dwarf) or Blauhilde (climbing) or a rare heritage variety such as Cherokee Trail of Tears or Bridgwater. All the beans will crop over a long period if picked frequently.
        Other suggestions, not yielding a continuous crop, but worth growing might include, potatoes, choose a early variety - two tubers to a 12" - 14" pot will provide a couple of meals. - also as noted in an ealier post about Jerusalem Artichokes, these too can be grown in large containers. They will requie support but will give summer long interest as foliage plants and perhaps even some flowers, then in Autumn you will have a fair harvest of tubers.

          How about Kale and/or Chard? Both can be picked many times. Some courgettes do well in containers, I know the variety "Tondo" was bred for container growing.

          Steve...:)
