    February approaches..

Who is sowing seeds this month, what are you sowing and when?

I'm sowing some herb seeds this weekend into a windowsill propagator and I also want to try a few of all flower seeds that I presently have...just three or four of each as I want to compare with plants that I'll sow later on in the month.

    Anyone else sowing?

    Steve...:)

Mid to late month I'll sow (in propagator) sweet peppers, cucumber and tomatos. These will be grown on in our heated porch until ready to put out into the greenhouse.
In early March I'll sow the toms and cucumbers for the polytunnel and towards the end of March I'll sow my outdoor toms.

I've got sweetpeas on a windowsill sprouting away and have already planted the perennial roots I bought at B&Q last month, in pots outside.

I really need to sort through all the seeds I have and decide which need planting, when! And decide which can go into the seed swap when it arrives with me :)

I'm going to sow a very few early tomatoes as soon as this cold spell is over - I got the varities "stupice" and "early girl" to try for the first time.

I'll be going through my seeds and seeing what can be sown this month and doing a few to compare to a later sowing and regardless of dates will be sowing a few more sweetpeas and my Princess Elizabeth from last year haven't done anything at all.

Great choices! :) - I have a number of young Stupice and Early Girl plants on my living room windowsill right now. Also Glacier, and Femspot cucs. Started about 10 days ago, floating in small water tank and a fishtank heater, so they come up fast - the Femspots within three days, the tomatoes a week or so. I also had a growtube overhead, really for the UV light to make sure mould etc doesn't get going in the humid conditions, before the seeds have germinated. I am pretty lazy, so they all go straight into 5" pots (and later into growbags in the greenhouse).

Can someone please advise me what to do with a Chusan palm (Chinese windmill palm) seed I have from the seed parcel. I only have one so cant really afford any mistakes. When would be the best time to plant it and in what type of soil to give it a good chance. Cheers 02.

If the seed is fresh get some multi- purpose compost zap the compost for five minutes in the micro to completely sterilize it (prevents mould growth),allow it to cool get a small ziploc bag put the seed in with the compost (moist but not wet) seal the bag keep it at room temp.out of the sun, usually takes 2-3months,if it's old seed soak it in water for a couple of days before putting it in the bag.

I have my seed potatoes chitting nicely on the windowcill in my kitchen along with a try of onion sets, inthe front room I have petunia, pansie, dhalia and ipomoea ( the latter are now seedlings) in trys in the front room with another tray of onion sets ( these ones have gone a little mad) along with the pelagronium cuttings I did last year( and a gang of indoor plants) :)

I've bouche some new cell trays for the next lot which will be just about enything that can be sown over the next couple of weeks, also been saveing my loo roll tubes for the runners and french beans.

How are we all getting on? won't be long before eveyrthing's in trays all over the flat, can't wait.

    "ipomoea"

I'll take you a side bet that they will be unwieldy by the time you come to plant them out. I sowed some last year a bit early and they were trailing everywhere and six feet long by the time I planted them out - nightmare to untangle! My Runner beans did the same ...
