I'm really cross with myself, what a plank.:wallbanging:
I decided to plant veg seeds today in my heated propagator to get things going. I had been given some rather smart (F1 hybrid) Cauliflower seed and also some smarter than I'd buy Leek seeds.
I haven't grown Cauliflowers before, but "nothing ventured" and I love Cauliflower. The packet of seed had 10 blue seeds in it so I thought I'd sow 4 in little pots and see what happens. I put the pack with the remaining 6 seeds in it aside and opened the Leek seed packet and started to sow those in a seed tray, THEN the flaming phone went. I dealt with the phone call and returned to my seed sowing. I picked up what I thought was the Leek seed which was guess what colour? blue! and proceed to sow the little remaining seed with the rest of the Leek seed. Thought "hmm I thought there was more seed remaining in the packet than that" ........... much swearing I'd sowed the remaining Cauliflower seeds in amongst the Leek seed. Both seeds being blue and the same size, it was impossible to tell which were which, ghit!
Now have no Cauli seed left. Haven't a clue what the 1st leaves of Cauliflower look like but do know what Leek seedlings look like, so by process of elimination! Luckily both seem to require relatively the same conditions. Oh, so cross with myself. Do others make a real mess of what was let's face it a fairly simple task.

Oh yes! I'm always getting sidetracked and can't remember which seeds are planted and in which trays and then double plant. Much head scratching when different leaves are growing in same place. You are not alone! He he.

Oh yes, have done that. Or sowed, answered the phone and went back to put the little i.d. sticks in. Hmmm, which was which

I usually sow seeds then forget where I put half of them, then find dead seedlings a few weeks later in the window of a room we rarely use.

You'll easily be able to pick out the cauliflower once they germinate - they have two leaves that are kidney shaped, whereas the leeks just uncurl a wee thin thing that looks a bit like a tendril.

Oh thanks all, makes me feel a wee bit less like a clot to know I'm not alone making a boo boo. Good news @fat controller, many thanks, I know exactly what you mean by Leek tendrils and was hoping Cauliflower seedlings would look very different. All not lost, just have to wait and see what appears despite me:)

@silu , I spent a couple of hours on Google last night to help your predicament , photos below should sort it out
We have all done the sow and forget routine :doh:My tip is to write out the plant labels before you sow , then you can place them straight in the seed tray . Now if only I could follow my own advice !

Morning @silu, oh yeah this happens to me too! Last year I was sitting quietly sowing my tomatoes, I had three varieties the phone rang, then a parcel turned up, by the time I'd got back to my seeds I couldn't remember which variety was in which pot! I've also sown other seeds in the same pot! Now I try to label the pot before I sow the seeds, for me that's the only way, my memory can't manage this task any other way!! :heehee:

These flaming Cauliflower seeds I mixed up with Leek seed are doomed. The Leek/Cauliflower mixed up seeds went into my heated propagator. I now know the difference between Leek seedlings and Cauli ones you'll be glad to know @HarryS! Hell's teeth the Cauli seedlings germinated and have grown like Topsey in a matter of a few days. I of course didn't look to see until last night. The damned things are well over an inch long and spindly.. the Leek seedlings are just beginning to show as I would have expected. I hadn't bothered to fix up my growing lights as never thought they germinate so quickly.
Can I "rescue" the Cauli seedlings by lifting them and potting on but plant deeper as I would with say Tomato seedlings or should I just bin them and start again?

What have you got to lose if you try pulling the Cauli seedlings and replant them? In a couple of days you'll know if they're goners or not :dunno:

                          I'd go for it :)

Thanks @CanadianLori worth a go as you say. Hell you'd think I was a complete beginner at this gardening lark. Only been gardening for hhhhmmmm about 35 years but not been at veg growing for very long and my L plates are quite obvious with the howlers I seem to be making. I'll be under the sod before I reckon I'll be any good at it:rolleyespink:.

I carry the L too, oh, wait, that's my initial too  :snorky:

I experiment with new vegetables each year. Last year it was squash and I decided not to repeat that one. This year is my first for celery... guess I'll see how that goes :)
