I’ve bought this ferm from a garden centre - unfortunately it was not labelled. I would really like to know what sort of fern it is, so if anyone could help I would be grateful.

It looks like one of them hybrids of pteris cretica...mayii maybe?
I find it so hard to identify ferns generally

It's crested, that's for sure. Very common is Dryopteris affinis 'Cristata'. Out of curiosity I tried a web search. Dryopteris filix-mas 'Cristata Martindale' was noticeable as it has prominent cresting at the end of the pinnae such as yours has. Your plant is young I think, so it won't have typical fronds yet. I'm not sure it's a dryopteris even. I'm curious with you :noidea:

Thank you. It’s such a pity that these plants are not named - at least with the species name. Anyway, I hope it does well and it’s not too fussy.

Totally agree with you. One sure way to avoid bringing un-named plants to your garden is to ... not buy them.

The ferns at our local nursery, which admittedly I haven't been to for a long time, used to sell assorted ferns that had a faint name marked on the pots. It's worth checking to see if it does as it narrows down to a species.

My first impression was a pteris species.

I saw a couple of teeny ferns (@ 3" tall) at the GC one autumn recently. No labels. So, spying a member of staff, I strolled over and asked him if he knew what variety they were. He frowned at them for a long moment, then his face cleared and he triumphantly announced "I think they might be ferns"!

Keeping a straight face, I said I was wondering about final size. "Well, they will get bigger than they are now".

I thanked him for his help.

Good shout, @Silver surfer. Thank you. I will have to wait and see how it matures… Apart from it getting bigger than it is now. :heehee:

Such a shame the average garden centre employ sales staff and not plants people...that's why I like specialist plant nurseries, we can speak latin words to each other!:heehee:

Yes, I don't get the impression "plant knowledge" is a CV requirement for employment in GCs. :) Which is OK if the plants are labelled informatively.
