We bought a very nice Fern last year , "Blechnum Spicant" . It was in a container in a shady part of the garden . Around Feb I noticed that the leaves had died back and gone brown . I thought it had died back in winter , like bracken , and all was well. I have just read that this fern should be hardy and evergreen ! All the dead leaves have been cut back and it has had a good watering ( may have dried out over the dry winter spell ) . Should I start to panic now ?

    TIA

All ferns have to replace their fronds at some point, even the evergreen ones. They get all tatty and that's the time to chop them off. I do this every year and they grow back just fine. You should be seeing 'lumps' around the crown which are this years' growth.

Yes mine are just starting to uncurl now.. Can you see little noddules on the crown as these are usually the new growth.. Mine are all indifferent states of wake up growth at present.. 2 kinds I have & I forget which they are, are just have noddules still others are starting to unfurl so I would wait a while yet..
