So getting back from Italy you want three things - limoncello, a lemon tree to make more limoncello and a fig tree.

T&M have a free P&P wknd on so I need to decide which to get - http://www.thompson-morgan.com/fruit/fruit-trees/fig-trees

I'm interested in hardiness and taste . Does anyone have any ideas?!

Brown Turkey is the one to go for Loofah, it loses it's leaves over winter but is very hardy. I got one free from T&M last year on some special offer, it is growing very fast. No fruit on mine yet but I know people who have them, usually birds eat all the fruit so you have to net.

This is proving a tough choice John! The more research you do the more varieties you come across and they all sound delicious...

As a grower of Brown Turkey for years, I'd say try something different.
I know its considered the hardiest but I'm sure there are better ones around these days.
    Not looked in catalogues lately.

Brown Turkey is very insipid in my opinion, so be a bit more adventurous if you want taste.

Thanks for the tip Pete. After a lot of reading on figs, I have opted for a Noire de Carombe from Blackmoor nurseries in Hampshire. Also got a 10% discount :)

Seemed the best option and I do like to have a slightly different choice. Nice enough from T&M (free P&P weekend) but the cost was quite high for a smaller plant

South Wall, if you have one, will help a Fig to ripen its fruit.

I think I have just the spot for it either against the house or against a fence. Will have to clear a few things either way!

Fig has arrived :) Looks very healthy, good size and great packing with a call from delivery driver beforehand. Plant is about 1.8m tall

Now, do I plant in location 1 or location 2..?

Beautiful plant. I am growing Brunswick figs. Are you limiting it's growth with paving slabs "planted" with it?

Pete, when you roast your figs, open them up and pour a drop of Balsamic vinegar into them first. It really brings the flavour out. :)

That is a beautiful plant Loofah. I am growing Brunswick figs here. Are you limiting the growth by "planting" paving slabs in with it?

I did look at the Brunswick but opted on this one in the end. To be honest I got a bit lost as they all sound good but it's really down to personal taste in the end.

It depends on where I site the tree Lea. If down the side of the house then the roots will be restricted already by house and pathways, if in the border then I'll have to either put in slabs or a big pot.
I also saw a Monty video and he threw in a load of rubble first for drainage but I have pretty light soil so shouldn't be an issue...

Picked these just now, the blackbirds had most of the ripe ones.
Might try roasting them over the weekend.
