I've just moved to a flat with a sunny balcony (though a little exposed to SW winds) and I'd like to grow a fig in a container. A foray to the local garden centre offered 3 options, a standard, which was a bit too tall, for about 16 quid, a few fairly normal plants about 2'6" tall with 3 or four stems at about the same price and some smaller, more densley grown plants, pruned as bushes I suppose. The variety was Ficus carica 'Nana' and they also had the label 'Nazareth' Red, on them, but they were twice the price! Does anyone have experience of this variety, or of growing a fig in a container, and is it worth me paying the extra for the little bushy number??? I've only ever grown an ordinary brown turkey in the ground before. It presented me with half a dozen delicious figs for a couple of years, and then when I had to give up the garden the new owners had 52 the next year!!! Lucky devils.

dont know much about them but I am going to try one this year. I thought that the one recommended for uk was the brown turkey one? i read that its best to grow them ina container otherwise the plant puts all its energy into creating roots and not fruits
