    Morning all.

I'm having a go at making a play nest thingy for the new lad. Its going to be about 4ft square, with about 2ft square sunken bit for him to sit in, and about 1ft cushion all the way round. The cushioned 'walls' will be about 8 inches high.

If I can't lay my hands on enough old clothes to stuff it with and need to buy some proper filling, how much will I need?

    I saw this on Amazon:

Is that the right stuff, and is that enough/too much?

    Cheers

    Does this assist?

My hollow fibre sleeping bag weighs 1.5 Kg and fits (fairly firm without using compression straps) in a sac 400 mm long x 225mm dia (0.016 m3) so 5Kg would be a firm 0.053 m3 which would fill a cushion 600 x 600 x average 150mm.

0.053 m3 = approx. 2 cubic feet. Calculate the volume of your design in cubic feet and divide by 2 to get the number of 5 Kg pack required.

Life might be a lot easier if you bought 8 pillows, approx 2 feet long and sewed them together end to end to form the square. They would be more than 8" high but would compress down into that space. Don't know what casings you've planned. You could pair them and sew two into each case, then attack ribbons or similar to tie the long cushions at the corners. But if the lad fell over into the corner the protection would be less there, obviously.

Then you wouldn't have to fill the house with annoying little bits of white fluff.

For the floor pad you could use an old duvet, in double layers if nec. They're easy enough to come by. I'm assuming you're planning to put some sort of cover on the nest, so you could cover the floor pad then sew or velcro on the walls after.

Another possibility is to sew a thick cloth shell and fill it with polystyrene beads. They get everywhere as well, though.
