My Rocket potatoes, although planted a month late this year (April) due to the cold, have been true to their name and romped away. The few flowers that had been on them have passed so I had an exploritry dig tonight and was delighted to find abundant spuds mostly between golf ball size and larger.......'New Potatoes' for tea tomorrow, "Yummy" - Happy Days :dancy:

Now why didn't *I* know that you could plant potatoes in April and have them on the plate by June  At least I know now

Whole point of new Potatoes is to get the water on the boil before picking them and then run into the kitchen with them before the flavour goes:dbgrtmb:

It sure is Harry, they were put in 9-10 weeks ago, Rocket usually take about 12 weeks, I think if I left them another 2-3 weeks some would have been too big for our personal taste.

When I put them in I put a generous layer of grass cuttings in the bottom of the trench; knowing they give off heat as they decompose I thought it might give them the extra boost at the time given the cold weather??, Coincidence maybe but its certainly done no harm :)

Absolutely Zigs :) , but sitting on the sofa with my wife Tracy at 9 o'clock last night and she says I wonder if the spuds will be ready yet?, I said it may have been a little early given they'd gone in late but after much begging :heehee: I said she could dig a couple up  , hence they got left until tonight's tea :)

Well tea-time has been and gone and what can say - new potatoes and bacon with mint sauce and butter - YUMMY ;):). What a difference too from shop bought spuds, you just sort of forget how good home grown are until its time to get your own on the table again :)

Here's my first spuds, from two Rocket tubers planted on 18th March in that recycling container, kept in the greenhouse for a month then moved outside:

I have some more "volunteer" potatoes growing in the copse. I doubt they are 'ready' yet (not flowered, but look promising). So, I'm guessing I need to wait a bit longer?
Well done to those of you who are harvesting right now: top job!

Yes "M" I doubt volunteers will be ready yet, I've pulled up a few in my veg patch with no signs of new potatoes forming on them yet.
