Well my 'Rocket' potatoes have been growing really well this year, probably due to the wet period of weather we experienced throughout April and the first half of May.

Over the last week I noticed the odd flowers that came on the plants went over quite quickly so I thought I'd try lifting a couple of plants (cautiously as I wasn't expecting them to be ready until early June which would have been 12 weeks from sowing) and to my surprise there were abundant potatoes from golf ball size to occasional tennis ball size, perfect and in just 9-10 weeks!!

As soon as the wife saw them she grabbed the folk and duely lifted the whole lot; we will be having some tonight for tea :dbgrtmb: In total we got just over 30lb of spuds from a 4ft x 4ft square, don't know whether thats good but we're happy thats for sure...:dancy:, so much better than last year when they struggled due to the dry conditions.

...Because the wife couldn't resist :snork:; she's not keen on the gardening but tell her the spuds are ready and she gets possesed, the whole lot dug up inside 30 mins :lunapic 130165696578242 5: , but as space is a premium in our little veg plot it frees up a square to re-plant with something else too..:blue thumb:

I doubt they'll last long though, once we've had a few meals and the friends and family that pop round always drop plentiful hints and end up sampling the goods too. :dbgrtmb:

I have some more Rocket spuds in large bags too that I put in a few weeks later so they should be ready in another 4/5 weeks, I also have another variety in some more bags and some lates in another square in the veg patch, so we won't be short of spuds this year :dancy:

Depends on variety and season ... but in general I prefer to leave my spuds in the ground until they are needed for cooking.

If they break up [during cooking] then its worth trying lifting them and storing them for a couple of days before cooking to see if that fixes the problem.

I have to agree with you John, they do seem much better than last year's crop that were produced during very dry conditions on the whole...:)
