    Hi All,

Some advice please on what plants needs pruning/trimming etc for our first winter with our first garden. We've planted Clematis, Cosmos, Shasta Daisy, Chrysanthemum, Hydrangeas, Dahlia and Gaura Lindheimeri and all seem pretty happy (although the Shasta seems to dislike all this rain). I've read about trimming the Clematis to the first node ?!? for winter but not sure about any of the others?

Any advice for a new keen gardener will be appreciated (have mulched the area last weekend with woodchips).

    Thanks in advance.

    Jaimie

There are three pruning groups for Clematis so it depends what variety you've got. Do you know which one? If not, when does it flower? :)

    Hello,

Sorry, very new to a garden! One is a Dorothy Walton and the other a Hagley Hybrid, I believe. The former is still flowering and the flowers all dropped off the Hybrid in the last fortnight.

    Thanks!

It would appear that Hagley Hybrid and Dorothy Walton are both in pruning group 3, so should be pruned back each year, to two strong leaf buds.

Have a look here for info on pruning Clematis :)
