I mistakenly picked up granular rose food instead of the FBB that I meant to buy at B and Q. Now there was a very informative thread on fertliser types and costs some time ago. But my question is where should I use Rose food ( NPK 5-5-10 ), it can't just be for roses - can it (?) , and where should I use FBB ( NPK 5-5-6.5 ), thus FBB is lower in potassium. Or should I just return the blooming thing to B n Q :D

Potassium promotes flowering and fruiting, so will help your roses to flower. The FBB, having less potassium will be less effective, although I'm no sure how great the difference would be. I tend to sprinkle Growmore (~ 7-7-7) around the garden, including the roses, and the roses bloom pretty well.

Maybe a rose specialist can give us the benefit of their experience.

I think that FBB will be slow release, whereas the Rose stuff will be fairly quick release.

Id be tempted to use it. I like to give the plants in my garden a bit of variety, some slow stuff, fbb/chicken poo pellets etc and then stuff like growmore as well. It seems to do the trick :)

    Edit:
Just popped into town and Wilkos are doing bone meal and blood fish and bone for £1.99 and growmore for £1.29 for 2.5kg packs. Seems good value to me :)

The trouble with bonemeal, is, it only encourages root growth. It`s brilliant, when use at planting time, but not relly much use afterwards for general feeding.:)

That is exactly what i use it for David. As you say, it is brilliant :)
A healthy plant needs healthy roots and bone meal added at planting time (not too much mind) stimulates root growth and benefits the plant tremendously

Thanks everyone for all the replies !
TG the variety method sounds good as I also use chicken poo :D But David has explained it for me best , FBB for planting and root growth and the Rose food and growmore etc to promote flowering - and feed say every 4 weeks ?
    Hopefully my understanding is correct.

Healthy roots equals a stonger plant which can grow better. For a lot of the more tender plants i am keen to get the roots well established before they push out top growth. For things like palms it does help them get though winter.

I would have thought that all plants beneft from a better root system
