Hello all, I had a good day on the plot today, managing to replant my fruit bushes to their new home. As I was doing this I wondered, as you do, is the frost proof fleece we buy true to its claim of protecting plants down to -5? Thank-you for your time :)

Yes it will protect plants to some degree, by stopping icy winds and trapping a little heat from the ground. It won't keep anything frost free at -5, eventually the temperature under the fleece will become the same as the ambient.

There is Fleece .. and there is Fleece of course.

Lots of stuff sold cheap is flimsy and thin. Thicker, better quality, and presumably with greater insulation properties, is available :)

The Thicker stuff will last longer too, as it is less prone to ripping, so personally I think its better value, long term.

      I agree with Kristen

The cheap stuff is usually "spun" whereas the better stuff is "woven"

For example; the spun stuff might last you a season, and the woven stuff with care, will last a number of years, thus justifying its increased cost!
