Hi there chums. I have 3 of these in the greenhouse that I potted up around 4 or 5 weeks ago. At the time of potting, one of them had a bud/shoot. Thing is, it doesn't appear to be doing anything. Am I doing something wrong ? Or, is it just a slow starter ? Cheers...freddy.

It's a bit early yet they are slow starters and need warm temperatures to get going, mine are just getting the odd shoot and they are well established.

I bought a ginger today from wilkos ,1/2 price, its a long looking stump with 3 dents in ,and out of one side is a fat pink bud, i soaked it in water for an hour then i put it in a pot ,should i keep it in the unheated greenhouse or leave it in a protcted spot outside ? how long do you think before i see signs of life ??:cnfs:

It ain't going to do anything outside I'm afraid :( I think I read that it expects a minimum temperature of 28C :( :( and up to reading that I had wanted to grow it, now I've abandoned that plan :( :( :(

But if anyone succeeds I'd love to have a go next year :)

I agree Bob, maybe 28C would be a good propagator temp, just to get the roots going but its not necessary.
They do start late, but one plant I have growing outside all year against the house wall is just showing a couple of new shoots.
One in a large pot is only just staring to move.

Newly purchased rhizomes that have been dried and are bare root will take a bit longer still to move.

I'd keep it in the greenhouse Pam.

Once they get moving they grow fast, given reasonable warmth and plenty of feed and water.

I'd be very happy to be proven wrong, and not a little miffed that I will have missed this year's crop, but more than happy to have a go next year.

I'll tickle the thread in the Autumn and see how you are all getting on.

I have two with shoots, out of six, the temp in the unheated polytunnel during winter went down to -4 which killed off some tubers:(.
They are slow to start but will get going IF we have some warm weather.:)

Ginger update, i planted it in the pot mid may and kept looking at it ,after 3/4 weeks no signs, so i scraped a little of the compo back and exposed the pink bud,

That obviously set something alight as since then i have a thin shoot going up 6"which is starting to leaf up :yho:

also as the whole top of the "tuber" is exposed i am seeing more buds forming, its in its original pot and i shall probably leave it there unless i get dramatic increase in size ,i have it outside now .:gnthb:
