I don't like wearing my glasses when using my camera so I rely on automatic focusing. I have a Canon 1100D but just recently the focusing seems a bit hit and miss. I've tried taking more than one shot of a subject in exactly the same position and some will be in focus others not. Is there an adjustment I can make to the set-up please to improve it. I would plough through my handbook but to be honest it's next to useless anyway and I'll look as a last resort. :)

Awfully hard to provide an answer Sheal as there's so many if's and but's.
One thing to check is that the auto-focus point is set where you think it is as there are 9 possible points. When you look through the viewfinder and half press the shutter the point that lights up when you get the "peep" sound is the one being used. For 99.9% of the time mine is set on the one in the middle.
One other thing to try is to use a tripod and take a half doz shots of the same subject without readjusting focus, this should give you a reliable indication as to if the focus is shifting shot to shot.

My eyesight is lousy but I find that the dioptre adjustment of the viewfinder allows me to slip my specs up on my head when looking through the viewfinder otherwise I'd be peering through the lower half of my varifocals or changing into my "peering close" specs.

Thanks Dave, unfortunately I don't have a tripod as yet, but I'll certainly check the auto focus point, I have checked this in the past but it was quite a while ago. :)

Another problem could be that the number of focusing points causes the camera to focus just above, or below, the subject you're aiming for. I have that problem when crouching low down and taking a longish shot as the camera will pick up the foreground. I've solved it for that particular kind of shot by using the option of less focusing points, which enables me, and the camera, to actually focus on the subject. But to be honest, Sheal, you should wear the glasses when taking the shot otherwise you're relying too much on the camera and "pointing and shooting".....and your camera is not a "point and shoot":nonofinger: camera!!

I consider myself told Armandii! :heehee: I've got used to pointing and shooting, I had a pocket camera with just a screen before this and you couldn't see a thing on it when the sun was shining, so I was taking pictures blind. Didn't do a bad job though.

I've taken on board what you've said though and it's time to sit down and have another play with the camera. Thank you. :)

Sheal, apologies if these ideas are a bit basic but check the AF/MF switch on the lens - you need it on the AF position if you want the camera to Automatically Focus.

Is the problem when taking photos of plants? If so use the Close Up mode (set the camera dial to the flower symbol). It will struggle to auto focus in low light or low contrast situations or may focus on the nearest object.

I know what you mean John, it's a bit like checking to see if your car's got fuel in it when it breaks down. :heehee: I've checked and my lenses are set to AF. I thought originally it was just on close up shots, but no, it's on some distance/scenery shots too. Unfortunately I've been busy all day today and will be until the weekend, so I will spend some quality time with my camera at the weekend and see what I come up with.

It's also occurred to me that I've never used my camera on manual focus with or without my glasses on, so some experimenting with that to. Thanks again. :)

Just thought I'd mention that AF/MF switch, I've got one on my camera and without realising I accidentally switched it into Manual focus once. It took me a good few hours of taking blurry pictures then panicking that my camera had broken, and then reading the manual to find out what had gone wrong.
