Apparently if you put a quarter of onion in your mouth and make sure your lips are closed it works-if not blame Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall!!

Peel them at arms length or under water, that lessens the effect for me.

OK Robert, an easier method - get on-line to Tesco Direct, navigate to the Pickle Section.... I think you can see where this is going. :thmb:

oops I missed the bit where you mentioned pickled onions *inserts that blushing smiley* I thought you meant chopped normal cooking onions. in that case i'd say what JWK started lol, though to be fair homemade pickled onions are gorgeous!!!!!
how do you do the vinegar (is it normal malt vinegar?) and spices? it's always something I've been curious about

You can also buy special anti-onion kitchen goggles but they're very expensive!

To be honest I get the ready spiced vinegar from the big shops.
You can get malted or clear already spiced for pickling.
I used to prepare my own at one time but to be honest the smell of boiling vinegar and spices is not recommended unless you are fumigating your house!!

    Tssk,

A star anise, a stick of cinnamon and a half nutmeg in a jar of white vinegar and away you go.

I don`t remember my Nanna ever boiling hers, just left it to it`s own devices.
