Has anyone tried the Doff slug and snail deterrent? It's a gel you surround the plants with. I have just seen some in the nearby agricultural merchant's garden shop.
It may keep snails off I'm thinking, which is my major problem as I have a stone wall boundary.

This time of year we use the local Blackbirds and Thrushes to keep the slugs and snails down.

They are breeding and going mad for extra food, so if you put out some food for them, eg mealworms and suet pellets regularly once or twice a day they will soon scrat around the rest of your garden eating all they can find.

We also use the Copper Tape around some of our pots and around the new delicate new shoots emerging from the garden soil, it seems to work for us, but others say it doesn't for them ?

We've had some success with the copper tape @ricky101 @Baalmaiden and we also make a mixture of yeast, sugar and water in a container (cheaper than using beer!) and they do seem to be attracted to that instead.

I don't know how this worked but I am as amazed as you may think this is stupid.
I have a Eucalyptus tree in my garden that sheds its bark. So when picking it up I just thought that if I crush it up it had a nice smell and I would put it on the top of my pots. One of the pots has a Hosta in it. It was OK for a while then every slug in the garden came to eat it.
After I put the crushed Eucalyptus bark around it. Not one of the leaves got eaten.
May be you could try this if you have or can find a eucalyptus tree.

What a good idea! There must be some Eucalyptus around somewhere. My Mum had one but it blew down in a gale.

I have tried the yeast sugar and water too with some success. I have two cats so can't encourage birds. Last year was the year of the mollusc I think. I regularly collected half a beach bucket of snails and slugs but this year is drier. I have seen more snails than slugs. It is due to rain down here tomorrow so we might have had our summer!
