    Hi All
As you know I am old, new to gardening and very KEEN

I first off request the PROTOCOL of the forums ie:- I do not wish to flood them with my continuous questions when at the moment I am not in a postition to offer advice back, Like a give and take situation that I would like to do

I am seeking advice on when to take cuttings, of what, and how

Our lovely Budlia was broken down with the weight of snow, I cut some still green bits off and stuck them in a compost pot, in January, outside they have produced green leaves, so I hope this will grow up to a plant later

SWMBO likes lavender, can I cut bits off the one we have and get copies of that?
Is there a site that discusses cuttings and propagation ?
I have searched www and this site is the one that does what it says on the tin
the only gardening forum you will ever need, and indeed it actually has active members posting

    Regards Jack McH

    Hi Jack,

    You're not that old:)

Nothing wrong with asking questions, its sometimes quicker than trawling thru old threads.

There is the search option on the tool bar at the top, but unless you know exactly what you are looking for that can be a bit vague.

If you've asked something that other members can remember a thread about they'll often give you a link to that thread as well as talking you thru it.

But if we didn't chat and ask questions then we would quickly become just a reference library & none of us want that, so keep firing away:dbgrtmb:

Not a cuttings expert myself but I tend to put more than I want into a 6" pot & then enclose it in a plastic bag till they either take or rot.

I'm sure others can be more helpfull:)

Jack, don't worry about flooding us with questions, that's what GC's all about and we've all had to start somewhere, so fire away. There is a Beginners section if you'd prefer that.

There is a section on propogation, where you can find out info from previous threads and also again, to ask questions.

With regards to your Buddleia, it copes with pretty harsh pruning, down almost to the ground, so I would give it a chance to re-grow if you haven't already dug it out. It may take a while though, see how it's doing late autumn, there might be new shoots by then. :)

Hi young Jack :heehee:. Ask away

You can usually get answers pretty quickly on here as we are a friendly lot - plus a load of nutters :loll:

Yuo can try what ziggy has said or try what Mrs shiney does - stick a bunch of cuttings in a mug of water and put it on the draining board by the window in the kitchen. Every other day she drains the water and puts clean water in, waits for little roots to show, then lets them continue on the water for another week whilst the roots get bigger and then pots those ones up.

She finds this works with almost everything. She's got bamboo and lemon grass going at the moment.

          Hi ELM,

Early morning, before the sun has come round.

My Mum used to swear by dipping them in hormone rooting powder first, but then again, she'd swear by a lot of things, including the Vicar.

never found the need for the stuff myself & was always worried about developing breasts.:thud:

            Thanks all
The search engine is good, only you have to be savvy enought to realise taking cuttings is "PROPOGATING" simples :-)
Good point about chatting otherwise the forums would be dead, the visitors just popping into the reference library

            Off to propogate

That's not the 'Go forth And Multiply' sort of propagating, is it? :heehee:

Behave, I have been digging all day and building a greenhouse base

I will offer SWMBO some tomatoes in September

Welcome Jack. Not so much of the 'old' since my numbers add up to more than yours :mute:

You really have brightened up my day. Hope you get the advice you are looking for. Enjoy your garden. Sometimes I can't help looking at everything and can't help being awed by nature. Just wish I could get down and get my hands dirty but I am not as mobile as I used to be. I know what I would like to do but am restricted to directing the OH. :fingerdrum:

I do manage to do some potting up and filling baskets etc as long it is at standing height.

              All the best
              Sally

In a very real way, by asking the question you are giving something back, because loads of others might also be interested in the answers. For example, I've never had much luck with cuttings, but the few occassions when I have I've gone against the rules and flooded the compost they're in and kept it waterlogged for a while. Reading your thread and seeing Shiney's answer, I now know of a potentially much better technique that I didn't previously know about.

As for the Buddleja, I'd bet my maximum bet of 10 pence that it will still be alive and well. Once it gets its roots down, it is virtually indestructible.
