Who can enlighten me on this. Whenever I research something on the interweb that involves ordinary people's opinions, I keep encountering terms I can't fathom.

I know, for example, OH = Other Half, SWMBO = She Who Must Be Obeyed = wife / girlfriend, but what, pray tell are these:

DD - From the context, I think this is something like daughter
    DH - No idea
    IYSWIM - Not the foggiest
    D - I give up
HE (in capitals, as though its an acronym) - Holy Echiniceas? Horrible Earwig?

Lots more I've encountered and then forgotten, so please feel free to enlighten me with any I've not mentioned.

TIA, which I think might be Thanks In Advance.

EDIT: Another one. DC ? From the context they appear to be on about either people or possessions, and not Washing DC or Direct Current.

I generally don't like these sort of acronyms, but then Mrs C reckons I am unusual as I use punctuation in text messages. :old:

In the earlier days of the interweb - I'm speaking of the days when you paid per second/minute (and paid dearly!) - those acronyms were very much a life saver (penny pincher?) as were smilies.

But, as with many things, people have interpreted them differently and they have morphed into something not originally intended in some instances.

For example: in earlier years, when I used to type LOL (meaning Laugh Out Loud) for some obscure reason, the recipient interpreted that as Lots Of Love! *insert head banging smilie*

So, while I was having a hearty chuckle - others were having a love in!

              DH - dear/darned/dratted/devoted Husband.
DD - (as above) but meaning Daughter
              IYSWIM - as per HarryS
              D - could simply mean Daughter (?)
HE - in my day meant Home Economics ;) (maybe now means Home Educated?)
TIA (I've used it on this site) to me means, Thanks In Advance
DC - I'm guessing here, but, possibly: Dear (darned/dratted/devoted) Child?
