good morning all not sure if any of you will remember my last post regarding wanting a staff from a dogs home but they won't rehome to people with children under 12,

well........................................ we now have one :gnthb:

we have had her 5 weeks she was a stray roaming our streets believe it or not so i phoned the dog warden and the police and the local radios reporting her lost,

she had no tag and no chip and is now all mine to keep forever :yho:

it seems like someone just kicked her out  as they have made no attempt to find her i can't believe someone would do this its shocking

i have taken her to the vets which they have told me she is about 2-3 yrs old i think she is a little older she's a stunning girl heres a pic

it makes my laugh how they won't rehome them with children under 12 but they had no problem me keeping this one and did'nt even ask if i had children

if any one has a staff i have a few questions if you could help me i have owned one before but that been 15 yrs back and after always keeping cats am really rusty in the dog dept lol

    Lots of love and patience.
Not to much food in fact only dog food with a few treats.
And they need kind discipline and training.
You have to be the boss.
I love dogs , all kinds of dogs .
We have always had a dog .
Our dog is 14 years old now a cross Cocker / springer spaniel.
I prefer Neutered Bitches to dogs they seem more loving and homely to me.
I find them easier to handle and train.
My Daughter had a rescue staff Tess, that had been beaten she was in a terrible state.
Very scared ,she would flinch and cower down every time someone went near her.
It was heart breaking to see.
But after a few months of love and care she turned into the best dog ,she was lovely, sadly she died of a growth in her head, she started having fits and had to be put to sleep when she was about 9.
They had 5 very happy years with her.
I hope you have a great time with your new friend.

I have a friend who just loves his Staffis.
I'm not used to dogs and am always a bit weary of their dog and can see that the Staffis need a lot of discpline and control but they are very very gentle and loving dogs.

Good luck with you dog and hope you have many many happy years.

    hi

thanks for your replies and help

i have kind of mastered everything apart from the toliet !

when i took her to the vets 5 weeks back she did tell me that she looked like she was just coming out of season well.........................

tuesday she started spotting and is still spotting today is this a season and is it normal to be spotting this long i have never had a bitch before only dogs so new to this side of things

when we first had her she would go to the toilet at night while we were in bed after about 2-3 weeks she settled in and then we just had the odd accident which is'nt a problem but.....................we seem to have gone back to week 1

im getting up to poo and wee every morning now she goes for walks 3 a day has lots of wee's when walking
she poo's in the back garden won't do this during a walk on or off the lead only in the garden which is also fine

she is let out every hr untill my hubby goes to bed at night which is about 11 pm

i remove her water from her after t time about 6 pm

she won't go to the door or make a noise to let us know so im really confused to why she is doing this

this morning she did a poo and a wee i cleaned that up (gaggin) then let her out in the garden
she came in i made a cup of tea and then went to go to the loo and she had done the same again in there

as she had just done it i told her to look and tapped her bottom and told her to go lie down in a sturn voice which she did and she knew she had done wrong

i don't want to tell her off as i think she has had a bad time of it been dumped and everything but
am finding it hard to know what to try next ?

when in season do they alter in toilet ways ?
do they alter in anyway as she has been crying alot this week ?

    thanks

I don't no if this will work for you but I always find the training sheets are good.
Leave one where she dirties to use and day by day move it nearer the door then outside .
It may just be she is confused and will settle in her own time.
Poor thing .She may never have been trained to go outside.
As you say you don't no what she's been through.
I'm sure after she becomes confident with you she will be just fine.
If you are not going to breed from her I would have her spayed.

    hi bob

rosie knows im the boss lol no probs there she does as i say sounds harsh that but i mean if i ask her to lie down she does and when i shout her on our walks she comes to me ,

i love her to bits and she is for ever having way to many cuddles maybe i am babying her too much

oooooooooooooo i have no idea wot im doing wrong i can't belive we kind of got there and then have gone back to square one !

well its something that i may have to put up with as i for 1 won't be chucking her on the streets or giving up on her like her last owners did

sams a stunner bob i would love to give another a home my hubby just looked at me as if my lights had gone out !

i am trying my best at the moment to try to get her to tolerate my cat and my cat like wise i think my cat would'nt bother so much but rosie keeps barking at her !

since we had rosie the cat comes in the back and rosie goes out through the front they are seperated by patio doors as the cat has to stay in the conservatory

i do think that maybe im going over the top and should just let my cat in the ssame room and have rosie on her lead so she can't eat her !

i had 2 cats rosie had my other one in her mouth she jumped up at her from the window ledge she was quite a clever cat and has since gone to live my mum over the road which was her second home anyway sooooooooooooooooooooo im down to 1 and don't want to loose this one i don't think rosie was going to hurt her as she did'nt bite down which makes me think maybe they might just tolerate been in the same room as each other

my hubby thinks im nuts and says that rosie will just go at her but i think its just been curious with been seperated !

any advice on this one !

Hi Catwoman, your dog is gorgeous and once you train her you will enjoy her, about her spotting, if she came out of heat 5 weeks ago she should NOT be spotting, this happened to one of my dogs and she had an infection which resulted in a hysterectomy.. But the vet could of been mistaken, so i dont want to Alarm you, maybe she is coming into heat, if you check her back end she should be Swollen, and one of my Staffi,s did get a bit incontinent in heat, the vet said it was because they dont just swell up outside but inside as well.. And you dont really have to smack a Staffi, there that thick skinned they dont feel it hahaha, A good stern telling off is better, they really are soft natured dogs....Dee..

    hi dee

too be honest i dont know why i did tap her bottom like you say she would'nt feel it in fact i think she thought i was stroking her lol

now you mention the incontinent thing her no'2 s are very hard and small as if a little constipated

she has been spotting since tuesday is this ok ? or should i take her the vets do you think

her back end is swollen but i think she has looked quite swollen from when i had her maybe thats just her look in that area and maybe why the vet thought she was just coming off heat plus a friend popped round to see her 2 weeks ago and said she looked like she was i heat !

i did think she was pregnant on monday as she has swelled up a little underneath and her teats became larger she was throwing up bile and eating like a horse and then she started shuffeling her blankets about crying and been really mard !

but with the spotting i just think the vet got it wrong how long does the spotting last do you know ?

i have read 3 days but we are in the 4th now

    thanks lisa

When a Bitch comes into heat, it starts slowly (spotting) then gets heavier, really heavy, she wont let a dog near her untill day 12/13, but i still watched mine from day 10,(in the garden just in case) I Think its uptill day 21 then she wont let a dog near her after that.. Whatever dog food you feed her, dont change it as her bowel movements will change, i think maybe thats why she could be having toilet trouble, Change of food...Also you could ring the vet and ask for advice on the spotting, it sounds like a heat, because of the swolen teats, OR shes in labour... :)

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA LABOUR !!

right im going for the heat thing

if this is going to go on for another fare few days i may think about having her done i have a mop attached to me lol and has been since tuesday :flag:

i wish i had of had some time to look into bitches really like i said i have had a staffy before but never a girl dog and most people read up and learn before they have something but .............................

on the monday i was unable to have a dog and then on tuesday roise walked into our lives so had to jump in with both feet really

i did'nt expect a season so quickly after the vet said she looked like she was coming off heat now it makes me think that maybe she is just a little large at the rear

when she 's on her back having her tum tickled her tummy goes flat so im thinking she's not going to be a mum

someone told me at work that i would'nt get much change out of £130 for having rosie done and after the age of 6 they kind of stop anyway

but on the other hand i have also been told that its in her best interest to have her done as it stops certain cancers ect

i don't want to breed from her although i would like to experiance it but when it comes to getting rid of the pups theres just no way i could do it it would be like giving one of my kids away plus its putting rosie through all of that and theres so many unwanted staffs as they have been really overbred for a quick quid

    thanks lisa

If she's just coming into heat you can get the Pill to stop it.. then think about gett'n her spayed, if you phone R.S.P.C.A. they give vouchers towards gett'n your dog spayed, or reccomend a vet that charges less than your rip off vets, Worth a Try CW.....

Why I suggested having her spayed if you wasn't thinking of breeding from her is our last Dog died with mammary cancer and when we had this dog the Vet recommended spaying as a way of protection again it happening again.
Bitches in season can be a pain.
The mess ,the dogs hanging around and the risk of unwanted pregnancy.
Also my moms dog had an infection and almost died and had to have an emergancy hysterectomy at age 10.

Hi Catwoman, just been reading through your thread. Congratulations on getting your Staffie:thumb:

I don't have any knowledge of them in particular only in bitches and can only offer my experiences which are well inferior to most on here but may help in a way.

Our Joyce was a rescue of about 6 mths/1 year when we got her. She was house trained but didn't walk to heel (still doesnt!) and wouldn't come back when called (she does now - well most of the time). She loves to bolt out the front door, always has, or the gate and will always do it:scratch: Doesn't matter if she's just come back from a walk, whatever, off she goes. I think there are things you just have to accept, it's a quirk of their nature.

Anyway, she too is sooo lovely so we put up with the odd nuisance stuff.

I remember Joyce first coming into season - it was strange. Eventually I used to put a pair of my old pants on her - seriously:o It just stopped things getting marked. Can't remember the exact length of time but it certainly wasn't as long as your saying. I would have her looked at again.

Joyce came back from one of her runabouts and guess what, she was pregnant. Everything was OK though but it was a worry to us about placing the pups especially as we didn't know what had mated her what with her being a cross anyway! As soon as possible after that we had her speyed.

Now, not wanting to be personal but I know the Dogs Trust ( ex NCDL) used to do it either free or very cheaply. They do an amazing job.

As you say, and has been said, not knowing her background it is going to take a while for her to perhaps realise that things aren't going to change and that she is there for good. What is her name btw, I've looked but can't see it:cnfs: Keep trying, Cat, you will get there. Keep asking questions, that's the best thing and then apply the answers to your own pet - it takes time for all of you (cat included) to get used to the new arrangements.

Wishing you the best and keep us informed with how you're getting on.

    cheers
