Hi guys, there has been a lot of talk on the news lately about fracking, and also a lot of conflicting information. I'm no expert on the matter but I have heard it said that this process actually produces toxic radioactive waste as a by product which is likely to contaminate surrounding areas to fracking sites and possibly even poison our drinking water... Also I've been told that the actual fracking process itself requires vast amounts of water that will be sourced from our local reservoirs which would probably fail to cope with this new demand. The energy companies are promising to clear up after themselves but over in the US a lot of these fracking companies seem to mysteriously go bankrupt when it's time to clean up the mess, leaving the government and tax payers to foot the bill. As for David Cameron, well I don't believe a single word that comes out of that mans mouth and I would bet my life that he stands to gain personally from fracking.
What do you guys think? Is the opposition to fracking deserved or should we welcome the oil companies and their drills and chemicals into our backyards?

The simple fact that there is a mess to clean up is good enough reason to not go down this route. We should be exploring clean energy sources now, before we completely destroy the planet.

Im not sure, but we need energy, they are currently test drilling up the M60 not far from the Trafford Centre.
Why can't they offer grants for house owners to have solar panels fitted on the roofs.
Are they could have them on new build houses, it could be part of the planning permission.
I also don't believe anything spoken by any politician

I'm all for it provided it brings our energy costs significantly down, as has happened in the USA.

Me too, just as long as it doesn't take place round here, although I am concerned about this

Opponents of Fracking say the country might sink if it's allowed

JWK and Scrungee does this mean you won't be superglueing yourselves to the quadrilla headquarters? :ideaIPB: ;)
I think I'm in favor of Yvonne and Ians posts myself. Although yes there is a lot of ridiculous nonsense out there regarding fracking yet that's not to say it is all nonsense, these companies have proven track records for poisoning the planet.

I teach at an oil company in Hamburg, and I've had many discussions with various people, in various positions, about this subject. What I've noticed is that the higher in management the students are, the more they are in favour of fracking. They are thinking, of course, of the profits which can be made using this system, but not one of them had given the slightest thought to the environmental catastrophe which would occur.
I have my own water supply in the garden, that means I don't use any "town water" whatsoever, and I have a three-chamber waste system which breaks down our house-waste and decomposes it, whilst the liquids pass through filters and seep slowly back into the ground. New fresh water.
If there was any fracking activity nearby, I would have to start using "town water" as the fracking would change the flow of my water source, even if they were working as far as 1.8km away as the entire underground structure would change. "We'll fill it up again", they say, but the damage has been done.
They, allegedly, filled up the coal-mines in the Ruhr Area when they closed them down but this still happened in many areas:

            http://www1.wdr.de/fernsehen/aks/themen/bergbauschaeden114.html

Fracking also causes earthquakes. I don't know if you have heard that fracking has already caused an earthquake in Japan.
The ground stone layer is hydraulically cracked in many places causing fissures for up to three miles away, so that the drills can get through easier to the region of the oil. The ground settles into a new position. Taraa! an earthquake, easy-peasy, let's destroy the world, quicker than before.

Yes you've guessed it... I'm against fracking in all shapes and forms, and for all fuels.

There were a couple of minor earthquakes in Blackpool when they first started in the UK. That's the main reason why everything was put on hold here as far as I know.

I am absolutely against it.. I am in total agreement with....
People & their water systems have been so contaminated by fracking in the USA now that people are getting really sick from the water......
We should take heed of these lessons I think & stop it here in the UK..... Well as well as the rest of the world..............

How do you start to deal with putting something like this right !!!

As has been said above, we need to improve Green sources of power, I'd love to see the Houses of Parliament/Buck House/Big Ben contributing to raise power by using Solar panels

Good idea, also Parliament could power half of London with the hot air they produce :)
