Hello. Could anyone tell me the name of this shrub. My nose led me to today on a visit to Burnby Hall Gardens. It was about 6ft tall and the perfume, pleasant at a distance was a bit overpowering at close range ( like some lillies). The flowers look a little odd and squashed but it's not just my naff photography skills, they really were like that, with a reflex top petal. Any help gratefully accepted,

    Iain

I think this is Clerodendron trihotomum.
It is heavily scented and the white flowers will be followed by outstanding, blue berries in autumn. The berries will have colourful maroon calyces

Great, thank you both. I've never seen a picture of Clerodendron that didn't feature the berries rather than the flower. Do you have any idea how tall it gets? The BBC site gives 10ft, but Bluebell nurseries quotes 20ft.

I posted a similar post on this forum a few weeks back ... was working in a garden, there was a very strong sweet pleasant smell coming from the neighbour's garden ... took a photo of the tree and posted it here ...

the shrub/tree was identified as a Clerodendron trichotomum var fargesii

I will definately plant these if space allows ....

according to this site, it grows 6m tall with a spread of 4m:
BlueBell Nursery - BlueBell Nursery - Trees & Shrubs - Clerodendron - Clerodendron trichotomum var fargesii

the one I saw was approx 3m tall and approx 2 1/2-3m spread ...

Hmmm, maybe a bit too big for the space available. Thank you Dim and SS. Maybe I'll have a look see if there are other species that would fit the bill. Now that I can't have it, it just makes it more desirable!
