Rosa. Can you get to the back of the freezer? If you can try and see if you can touch the motor if it is accessible. If it feels red hot, then that will mean that the motor is on its way out.

Ours went the same way last year. When we contacted a local electrician he said to turn the whole lot off as the motor could cause a fire.
It was going to cost a fair bit to have a new motor installed,so we ended up taking the Freezer up the local tip,and making do with a second hand one.

Hope this helps..but sorry that it has gone wrong.

Hi Rosa.My husband says the motor should be at the back of the fridge freezer,so unless you have someone to pull it out for you it would be difficult to check without it toppling onto you.

He says that the motor should be on the bottom at the back.
I am not sure why the fan is making a noise.Something is certainly wrong with it if it keeps defrosting all your stuff.
I should contact an electrician ASAP.
I wonder if there is anyone else out there who could help with advice!!

Let me know how you get on

I felt right at the back bottom feels like a round drum feels hot to the touch and the pipe next to it feels hot.
The fan is still running iff it was on its way out surely the top part of the fridge would stop working it is very cold.

Rosa.Hubby says that if the drum is so hot that you are burning your fingers, then that is the motor. He isn't too sure himself, and says that it depends on how the system has been set up.
As a frost free system, then your stuff shouldn't be defrosting. Are your door seals ok?Something is going wrong. Unless someone else can suggest something.I think you will just have to make sure the doors are shut until you can get someone in to look at it.
If the motor is red hot, then that is your problem.Unfortunatly nothing is made to last these days.
Sorry this will be my last post of the evening as I am just off to bed.

    Good Luck again

The compressor casing normally runs hot as the refrigerant needs to be in a gaseous state for it to be compressed. It should not run continuously though. The pipe taking it to the condenser (a grid of ususlly black small dia pipes and some sort of radiator pannel) will also get hot. As the gas cools in the condenser it is turned into a liquid which then gets throtted to a low pressure (passed though a fine nozzel restrictor) and then enters the evaporator where it draws heat (refrigerates) the surroundings. After evaporation the vapour is then recompressed and circulated round the system.

If the compressor is OK then the usual causes for the refrigeration cycle to break down are:

    faulty themostat

    throtle blocked by debris.

loss of refrigerant (unlikely as they are completely sealed systems these days)

Unless its under guarantee or a very expensive item it's cheaper to dispose of the fridge and get a new one rather than call out a specialist repair company.

Laws are very strict on disposal (due to CFCs and greenhouse gasses) and some authorities still do free collection. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU ATTEMPT TO INTERFERE WITH ANY PART OF THE GAS LINES. They are under pressure and release huge quantities of vapour which can easily suffocate anyone if they are in a confined space.

Thanks frogesque, will write all this down as i will never remember to explain to hubby what could be the problem.
It started running again but my hubby had turned the thermostat up high at the front of the fridge
i turned it down slightly but do feel it is on its way out.
When we buy a new one probably from comet do you think they will take this one away for us.
Thanks for the advice.

I think that most big shops - Comet/Currys etc will take away your old one. I think we paid £10 or something for Currys to do it when we got a new fridge freezer a couple of years ago.

Hi at the moment the fridge/freezer. is working it is switching itself on and off usual thing it does, will just keep an eye on it.
Black cat it is only 3 year old it should really last at least 15 years. just wondering iff there was a blockage where the drain hole is in the fridge section, could be. [IMG]

Rosa I may be stating the obvious here ..BUT ..do throw away the ice cream .. and any fish that can't be cooked and eaten immiediately. Raw meat can be cooked and refrozen....defrosted vegetables and fruit will only have a short life if kept in fridge, but coud be incorporatd in stews or pies etc.........any sauces I wouldn't risk, although other dairy products you may have, eg.. butter, cheese ..should be OK if refrigeratd. Hope all goes well .... M-L

rosa, have you checked your household policy to see if you are covered for freezer problems, may help towards purchasing another if you decide to? ;)

When the freezer defrosted went through the lot and threw most things away, I was pretty lucky as hubby is going back off-shore so i let things run down anyway.
Funnily enough since i turned up the freezer it seems fine, maybe i did not have the thermostat on the right setting, too low maybe. keep popping in and out to check it seems to be going on/off fine. [IMG]
