Frog and Toad mad in this household!!
This time last year and the year before (1/2 term week) the frogs were well and truly out and spawning. As its been so cold this year, there's not sight nor sound of any - our pond was iced over 3 times last week!!
Has anyone seen any yet? Its going to be much later this year, I think....

In the immediate vicinity of your pond do you have good hybernation opportunities from the frogs and toads where the ice won't have got in? On my little piece of land, I believe the toads like to bury themselves in mud at the foot of my hedgerow for winter. I know this because we accidentally woke one up while doing some replanting work over christmas.

We to are looking forward to the day. but not yet.
Only clue we have that they are there is I found a dead one yesterday and few inches below the surface. Lets hope our albino has survived and will be ready for some more video when he is out and about.

Our frogs are swimming around, i saw a couple yesterday when i was having a tidy.
Still haven't seen that funny yellow/cream coloured one since .
I'll keep a good look out for it this year and try to get a photo.
I can't wait for the clocks to change and the garden and ponds to come back to life.

No sign of them over here, our pond is frozen over most of the time, so think it will be late this year, too.

Robert and Lyn - did you post pics of your albino and yellow/cream frogs up last year? If so, I must have missed them.

Several frogs in the pond at work but they have been there all winter despite being iced over and there are quite a few Smooth and Palmate newts visible. The frogs will be in amplexus soon if the mild weather continues.:)

:( I sadly fished two dead ones out of the shallower end of mine too.. The even sadder thing is that they were tightly clasped together in the mating game... :( I can only put it down to the fact they were in the shallower end & we did have some very deep penetrating frosts for a week or so.... :( It is sad & strange as the rest of the frog population in there seem fine & I have never had that happen before...... Then I suppose this was the coldest winter for years..

    Thanks, Robert!

I see that you wrote on YouTube that it was back again. Was that the second time then?

We went though a stage a couple of years ago when we found many dead frogs.
Some in the ponds some out.
    No spawn.
    I have no idea why.
    They seem O'K now.
Lets hope this spring will be a bumper crop so we get loads of tiny frogs the way we used to.

We had lots of dead frogs several years ago too, all in the pond if I remember correctly. We think it was after a long cold period when the pond was frozen over the whole time and they couldn't come up to breathe.

Correct... this I think will be the third year for our albino if he has survived our winter

Yes - there are plenty of places for them to hibernate - the surrounding area is mulched with bark and is the jungle area and the trampoline. We did build a hedgehog shelter out of old bricks, tiles ans loads of logs & sticks.
We found a newt last year, and are hoping for more this.... time will tell!!

Several pairs in the Koi pond getting to grips I hawk them out and put them in the wildlife pond otherwise the Koi will eat them and any spawn, the Koi have started feeding and will eat anything that is in the pond, the other night some of the newts were on the lawn making for their pond so another spring is springing.
