We have an invasion every year when no end of them come to spawn in our pond. Four or five different sorts. First they keep looking out of the water, it is a sight to to see all the little heads popping out and looking at you! I love to hear them croak, some are a bit timid and quiet, and others burst out with a full voice. Before they finally mate some of them let you touch them. I kneel down at the side of the pond and hold my hand in the water, palm up, and quite often one will then come and let me tickle him under the chin. If I am very lucky, then one will even sit on my hand. A few days after they have mated they are suddenly gone until the next year. There are a few that live in the pond the whole year around.

....our French friends DO appreciate my sense of humour !! :D

We have a lovely family of toads living in our garden, they have been here for years...late evening they come out onto the terrace....in present conditions I sprinkle quite a bit of water about --which they seem to appreciate [IMG]

Mona Lisa, are the toads the common brown or the beautiful green toad? Germany is its most north western range. [IMG]

No, we have the Brown Toads here; we are a bit too South ! they do exist in North Eastern France......

We had a visitor the other day who was very adventurous and came into our verandah .....I wasn't able to get a photo.....but he was a Green European Lizard ... in total he was about 25 cm and about 6 cm across .....

mona lisa..That is horridble..I am definately staying in the uk now..I have this thing about frogs and lizards and i keep talking to myself that its silly as when i approach they run off..but no way would i touch one..and no way would i harm them either..I know some people chop them in half with garden spades as i have heard loads of people over the years say they do that and i find that gross and nasty..I have decided they are coming from next door they have a better pond than me but they hardly have any plants so i guess they like it here better..Honest they are all shapes and sizes out their.. a toad in the front garden..grrrrrrrr..and round the back they seem to be the size of a 50p piece up to LARGE...I know lots of women are scared of mice and rats well i am not bothered about them at all in fact i take cheese out for the mice..its just all these frogs i only want one for the grandson to look at..thats enough..I will have to put a notice up room for one frog only.. WILDFLOWER, THE LIZARDS ARE HARMLESS AND THE GECKHOS, I lived in SRI-LANKA FOR 20 YRS. AND AS CHILDREN WE USED TO PLAY WITH THEM. Harmless creatures.large frogs green and brown used to cause a stir at night when it rains its like listening to a chorus and there is one frog that has a barritone voice among the rest of them. then there are the crickets and grass hoppers large ones too I miss them all :D :D

Hi Wildflower I am with you about frogs and I am terrified of mice and rats, as a matter of fact I am nervous of all creepy crawlies. Incidently on the radio yesterday it said that mice do not like cheese. I would not like to find out. I would run a mile if I saw one. I have got the creeps just thinking about it

jazz..the mice here love cheese..as i put some in little cubes by the wood pile that one of them is living in and he soon pops out and collects it..my neighbour has an old wall and their are loads living in their they have made little houses in holes in it..my dog sits for hours watching them as they pop their head out to tease him..and yes i am not keen on the frogs ugly things i am glad these here dont sing !!I dont mind " a frog " not hundreds as i am sure their are hundreds here lurking around..when i move i shall put my next pond as far away from the house as possible..or i may just have a bog garden that is something i am thinking about..
