I've used fabric to cover a weed covered front lawn as it was almost impossible to dig up because of tree roots and weeds.I've made slits and put in shrubs and ground cover plants then covered over with a thick layer of :( bark - question - will the ground cover plants be able to spread - if not what's the best thing to do?

Hi Jilly - it would depend on the type of ground cover plant. If they spread by rooting themselves as they go, then they won't get much further, but if they spread out from the central root, they should just grow over the bark. That's what I have done in my front garden and they're spreading nicely.

BTW - you did clear the weeds out before you put the weed matting down, didn't you? It's a bit hard to tell from your post! :D
