It's been predicted all week that we would have frosts down in the South East, so I've just spent the best part of an hour earthing up spuds, and covering strawberries and other tender stuff outside with fleece, then moving all my really tender stuff indoors from the greenhouse bench (toms, cannas, begonias).

I'm in Derbyshire and we'be got a 50\50 chance of frost tonight, taking no chances, spuds have been earthed and fleeced, other tender stuff fleeced and/or moved to the greenhouse :)

The sky has cleared here after a cool, cloudy day and the temperature is dropping rapidly.

Like JWK, I've just been outside on a mission to save my spuds. Rather than earthing up, I've covered them all with whatever came to hand.
A whole variety of receptacles has been pressed into action, including upturned pots, buckets, boxes and even an old tin bath.

The end result looks something like a piece of modern art:

I was getting some curious looks from the neighbours too. They probably thought I was practicing some kind of mad, eccentric spring gardener's ritual.

Maybe it is a kind of madness, but I know I am among friends here and all you fellow gardeners will understand. :hapydancsmil:

Nearly 10pm and still 8 degrees, fingers crossed it don't plummet, I suspect it will be near dawn when it will be at its lowest !

I only did mine as they are just starting to flower, they are pretty hardy and in previous years I've just left them to suffer.

I'm in trouble, Mrs JWK has just got home having left me in charge earlier. She had stripped our bed with instructions for me to put clean sheets on etc, she is not impressed I managed to find time to keep all my precious plants cosy but forgot about us. I might need some hort fleece to snuggle up on the sofa tonight
