Sheal kindly suggested I reposted my query on this forum in the hope I can get some advice. Tried in the photos to show what the Rose looks like (healthy bits) and not! The Rose is quite old, I'd guess about 15 years old, South facing in quite good soil which is spread with horse manure annually. It has had the odd bit of die back before which I'd expect but this year it's much worse and what seems odd is that it's mainly newer stems affected. Some stems had got as far as producing buds for this year and then decided to give up the ghost. I have looked for damage lower down the stems affected and can see nothing obviously wrong. Hope someone can help as my knowledge of Roses isn't large!

DId fresh manure make contact with the rose itself?
    U sprayed anything near it?
Any growths by the union? (graft point)
Is it wilting from the bud down or up the strm?
Somethings gone wrong this season if its the new growth.

Thank you so much chimneyosegardden for trying to help my puzzle. More photos which I hope show that I can have dead leaves and buds on same branch as live ones! To answer your questions. Lived here 10 years and Rose has had a doze of my home produced (horse I quickly add!) manure annually. Not touching main stems at ground level. Not sprayed anything near Rose. Re which way it's wilting it seems completely random. I have spotted small section on 1 of the branches where the bark has fallen off/missing. This is possibly damage from deer but it's not 1 of the rose's main stems and isn't that severe, enough to allow infection to setin? Missing bark section wouldn't equate sizewise to a wound from removing a main branch which I did do a few years back . I have had a little scratch at the stems of the worst affected branches and they are green! so alive...well atm! Quite a few of my shrubs/Evergreens have shown wind burn signs after flaming East wind blew for weeks but they are beginning to recover and can't see how windburn would have affected buds which will have been produced quite recently.Do hope I'm not going to loose it as it's a lovely shape and normally makes a lovely splash. Most Roses really don't do that well here, probably that's due to cold climate and acid soils. The worst affect branches are year old ones altho parts of older branches are also affected. I am a reasonably knowledgeable gardener having been at it for many many years but due to my location I can't grow most Roses to their full potential so tend to only have a few, subsequently apart form the obvious blackspot, result of aphid attack not clued up on any Rose specific problem. I have hardy Geraniums growing underneath the Frulingsgold which are looking perfectly healthy so no apparent signs of a soil problem. Also have hardy Fucsias in same bed closeby again looking very healthy and growing well. I'm completely stumped.

Hmmm......It looks like some sort of burn Silu, be it sun, or wind. I should be listening to myself, I planted a young Sorbus in the spring last year and this year it's leaves on one side have shrivelled up like yours and dropped, I get the feeling it's wind damage on both yours and mine, together with the prolonged cold spell we had. Have you any sign of new leaf buds on those branches?

Meanwhile I think it's best to leave well alone unless it gets worse and see what happens next year, likewise with my Sorbus! :)

Thanks Sheal, the wind is the only thing I can think of too but so strange that some bits are affected and other aren't even on the same branch! While some leaves/buds have shrivelled up there are buds opening "next door". No evidence or "replacement" leaves where the dead ones were yet, fingers crossed. Do hope your Sorbus recovers...my favourite trees. I planted about 20 all different varieties in my previous house and they were just getting past the lollipop stage when we moved house..boo. The new owner felled the lot to make a football pitch....GGGGRRR, but hey they weren't my trees any longer.
