Having a small, enclosed garden, walled back and front. I have devoted the NW/SE front wall to Loganberries, Tayberries and Blackcurrants the NW/SE back wall to Blackberries, two dwarf apple trees, a small pear tree & Rhubarb and the back(SE) wall to Tayberries.

I also have some Blackcurrants and tayberries in the various borders back and front not directly adjacent to the walls. The switch to Loganberries and tayberries followed several poor Gooseberry seasons topped off by the stripping of all the bushes by the saw-fly caterpillars.

I am trying to rejuvenate an old hedge and wanted to propagate some cuttings from an old Berberis Darwinii plant that forms a small part of it. I have tried to propagate but all 32 cuttings just rotted away and none formed any roots within an 18 day period. I should be particularly grateful for any info on Berberis propagation.

Hi, Grump and welcome to the site. You should take soft wood cuttings now. Cut them about a quarter of an inch below a leaf node, trim the lower leaves off and shove them in the ground somewhere quiet, where you can leave them for about 6 months. The cutting needs to be about 4 inches long.
