My lawn is in a really bad state. I decided I would top dress it (if that's the right term) with sand in order to kill the moss and improve aeration and reduce surface moisture. Later I will rake it all up and overseed it.

Today my 5 year old nephew is here. I was wondering how I could keep him amused and wear him out so he sleeps well tonight.

An idea struck. Off we went to the garden centre to buy my sand. Then we spent all afternoon building sand castles on the lawn and playing silly games involving me building them and my nephew smashing them up.

Several hours later, my nephew has had fun, is tired, and the lawn is covered is sand. Result:)

He's gone back home now, and I have to say that while it was fun, I'm glad to have some peace again.

After we'd coated the whole lawn in sand, the neighbour came out. He is very knowledgeable about all things garden related. I told him what we done and what the plan was, and he immediately asked what type of sand I'd used. I just replied, 'sand sand, why?'. He then went onto to explain all about different properties of different grades of sand. By the end of the conversation it had became apparent that he didn't think that play pit sand, which I'd used, would achieve the desired result. So while the day was fun, as far as the moss problem is concerned I may just have wasted my money. Oh well, we live and learn.
