Hi Pete: Unless you know what you're doing (and I don't :D ) The safest policy is, 'look but don't touch'. I think about 10% of UK fungi are poisonous, 2% deadly and 25% might give you a trip of some sort or a stomach upset. There are also a few really weird ones that only affect you later if you drink alchohol! All responsible sites state you need a proper field guide and preferably someone experienced in your locality otherwise you could be playing Russian Roulette.

All that said, the top one smells delicious and I would like to know more about it. Generally nondescript little brown mushrooms like the two below those (often refered to collectively as LBMs) are best avoided as they are either unpalatable or halucinogenic.

Found these when I was out with my Dogs last week, bought them home and added them to my Bouf Bourguignonne, they were either Horse or Field Mushrooms, We are still alive, I must admit there are lots of very deadly ones around, I have a very good book and also my Father used to take me Mushrooming when I was a small Girl, I only eat the ones I am really sure about

I think yours are Horse Mushooms whereas these are Field Mushrooms but please - don't take my word for it! [IMG]

Also spotted some Shaggy Manes: Coprinus comatus which I believe might be OK although I've never tried them
