IMG_1281.PNG Hello i am a newbie to the forum and have a question regarding what I assume is a fungus in my lawn. The lawn does have bad drainage and is in the shade so not ideal. I have hopefully attached a couple of pics, would anyone know what this fungus is and how it can be treated?

Looks like Dog lichen (Peltigera canina) and is an indicator of very poor soil conditions for grass, possibly due to it being far too wet and compacted, and as you mention, shaded. It also looks from your pic that springy turf moss and possibly Lesser cellandine are present.

Getting rid of the lichen seems your main objective, so improving the soil condition is about the only method that will work as it will laugh in the face of most chemical treatments (including weedkiller). As a guess, your soil is heavy clay soil?

You should consider a serious aerating project to improve drainage, as well as a good scarfying bllitz to help remove the main culprit and moss too. Then re-seed and apply a top dressing to give the grass a chance to re-establish.

Thank you that's great. Have googled dog lichen and yes this looks the same as in my lawn. sounds like I have some work to do. You were also correct with the clay soil.
