Evie (who's 3, almost 4) loves helping in the garden. She's particularly keen on planting seeds.
The other day, we went to the garden centre and ended up having lunch there. They do the usual 'children's lunchbox' sort of deals, where you chose 5 items, but instead of putting them in a cardboard box, you get them in a half seed tray, and you get a free packed of seeds. Well this time was ornamental gourds. Not what i'd have chosen, but free, and interesting nontheless.

So today she decides she wants to plant them. except that it takes me about an hour to understand what she wants to do because she keeps telling me about her 'goodies'. Finally she says that she wants to plant her 'goodies' which narrows it down a little bit, and when I find the packet i finally understand.

But no matter how many times I try to tell her they're actually GOURDS, she's not having any of it. So now I have a tray of Goodies in the greenhouse, hoping for the best. :heehee:

"Well this time was ornamental gourds."

      Oh!no!

Mine were nearly 10 before I weaned them off Gourds to something "useful" or "edible".

We had to have them stacked in a pyramid in the hall so they could be shown to all visitors throughout the winter, and mouldy ones were only reluctantly removed ... although the whole edifice frequently tumbled down and rolled across the table onto the carpet!

But, all joking apart, Gourds are amusing, fun to grow (they do trail a long way, hope you have a reasonable sized patch), and the weird shaped fruit is entertaining for kids, of course.

Vegetable Squash would be just as much fin, in my opinion, even though they would be all identically shaped and have no warts ... but ... what do I know?!

      Oh great!:loll:
I'm going to plant them in her bit of the garden then! I was going to put them in containers, but from the sounds of it they'll be too big!
Maybe I shouldn't have planted all 20 ish seeds!!!

20 plants! :D That might be too many! They are rampant, I grow 4 of them them up a fence and they manage to climb up amongst my neighbours tree. Good fun though and great to get kids interested - good luck to Evie :)

:loll:Oh well, maybe they won't all make it!
I think I'll give a couple to my MIL, she likes gardening!

And this is to join the million sunflowers we already have growing for her 'competition'.
