Have you, like many people that buy these items from places had problems with sitting comfortably?

If so the reason behind this is angles, I have looked at this and found that if you make your own or know some one who can make it for you, ask them to increase the reclining angle of the back of the bench from 92 degrees to 115 degrees which would allow you to sit in comfort and not fidget as the back is happier.

When I made ours the visitors to our garden have said how nice it was to sit and relax in a seat which is pleasing to the eye and comfortable to sit in.

If you have an opinion on this feel free to express this and respond.
It might get companies who cater for people with disabilities to listen not assume.
We sit for as much time as we sleep if we are disabled.
    Just a thought.

Could you perhaps post a few photo's from different angles of your seat?

      Steve...:)

Why not contact a garden seat maker and explain your idea and experience.

For example this company: Garden Benches - Garden Benches - Garden Furniture/Patio Furniture - Sustainable Furniture | Teak Garden Benches Ethical & Certified Teak Garden Furniture | Garden Benches | Garden Seats

They claim to make benches for a wide range of prestigious clients so may well be very keen to adopt your idea - who knows maybe even pay you a commission.

      a-a

p.s. I have no connection to this company, just came across them on the web.

        Steve R,

As I am at work now I shall try to sort some pictures out and maybe if I have the plans put them up for you all to look over. :dbgrtmb:

        alex-adam,

I have tried to contact various companies to which make these items for general furniture and those with disabilities to no avail. :nono:
They just say it would cost to much to change something which until now only you have bothered to highlight. :thud:
Falling on deaf ears as the saying goes.
I shall keep trying even if they just keep coming back with sorry.:cry3:
Someone will see sense in the end and say why didn't I think of that.

Seems a good idea but, having a bad back I have problems with sitting on benches. Apart from my bad back I find that any hard surface for sitting is extremely uncomfortable. So the shape of the seat is also important.

I have three benches in the garden and each one has a slightly different shape. People do comment on the difference in comfort of them.

This one gets the votes for the least comfort. The seat is shaped but not quite in the best place and the back is slightly raked.

Most people find this more comfortable because the curve of the seat is further towards the back than the other one. Which puts their bottom and back in a different position. They then find the rake of the back is quite comfortable.

This third one is completely different. Everyone finds this more comfortable but some people say it's makes them feel as though they are laying back too far. For shorter people there can be a bit of a problem as their feet don't always reach the ground. The position of the seat can be changed as it rests on the legs. It depends on how much sand is used to bed it on to the legs. It needs its spring clean up.

I do like the look of two of your benches, but do not think I would be able to work the third as I am not into stone.:WINK1:
Loverly curves on all of the benches, and have looked carfully at the two which I maybe able to incorperate in a third for our little place.
As for now the thought has passed onto a table which needs to seat at least ten people around as the family will grow to a minimum of this before grand kids.:heehee:

May all our ideas help the industry to work with people like us and not against them just so they can make a coin.

If I were you I would sit back and let the world know we tried.:yess:

When I occasionally suffer from lower back pain I avoid sitting in anything other than a chair with a near vertical back otherwise I can't get off it with assistance/excruciating pain. I will take a dining room chair into the garden for that reason, and also because they have a higher seat plus less depth of seat.

I only have one wooden bench which is down by the pond and although a cheap one has lasted years and is comfortable enough for me and the cats.

However, when I built the Arbour last year I was forced to put in a fairly straight back to the seat which might have proved too straight for some peoples likes. But because the lateral pieces of wood are each screwed to the one underneath and the one on top, and the bottom and top pieces screwed to a top and bottom holding bar fixed to the Arbour sides, the back rest actually flexes gently to the shape of the pressure being applied to it.....and visitors are often surprised to find it doing that and how comfortable it is.

The other seat I have is a stone bench without a back which is fine a few minutes sit but I do prefer seats with a back for comfort.:snork:

Why didn't you think of that?

I think you said you made your bench, why not make them for sale? Your market wouldn't be limited to just 'disabled' people. I'm not disabled and I hate off-the-shelf benches. I find them ridiculously uncomfortable. They force you sit either so that you're slumped forward, or actually using your back and neck muscles to hold you straight, and if you do try to sit back, in no time at all the top edge of the back rest starts digging in. Its the reason I've never actually bought a bench for any of my gardens past or present.

I could make my own bench, and probably will when I get round to it (been saying that for years now), but if someone was to make me one that is actually comfortable enough to sit on, I'd probably just save myself the effort and buy it instead.

So why don't you make them up? You could make a few and take them to the car boot sales at first. Also make them to order. If you don't have the time or the inclination, just get someone else to make them for you and sell them on.
