    Hi all,

Young amateur gardener and just moved to a new house with a garden border. Really unsure what to do with it! I’m looking to put in a rose plant behind the lavender and want to fill the gaps in the empty parts (with some pruning needed!). Any ideas on what could fill the gaps would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Jordan, before you plant a rose, have you decided whether it's to be a bush or a trained climbing one? If the latter, you need to get some strong garden wire in place on the fence (2 or 3 horizontal wires about 30cm apart) so you can tie the long stems to them and the rose will flower all along the stems. It can be as simple as some long, sturdy screws into the fence posts with the wire strained between and wrapped round the screws, or tensioning-type ones that keep the wires taught. Then you need to think about aspect. Does the fence get a lot of sun? When and for how long? Some roses do better in shady conditions, e.g. some deep reds and white or cream-flowered ones. Have a good look at the description before buying. David Austin's site used to have a wealth of information.
For the rest of the planting, we'll need to know what the soil's like and the aspect before offering suggestions :)
