It might be an idea to gather all the 'Beginner's Garden Development', monthly garden colour threads under one pinned umbrella to keep all twelve together as a reference. At the moment you have to search for them and anyone new to the site might not realise they exist.

Perhaps a section "Monthly Garden Colour", sub-headed "A guide for newcomers and old forks!"

Good idea Frogesque. You have also raised the question of a reference section.

There seem to be some basic frequently asked questions such as, How to overwinter Dahlias, How to make a compost heap, How to improve clay soil. Would it be possible to move such threads into a reference section after a time? So that they could be permanently available to everyone. Somehow we need to be able to add comments or additional threads on the same subject, as no single thread can be set in stone as the definitive answer.

This would require quite a lot of work on someones' part. An alphabetical reference section with hyperlinks would be great, but there would have to be someone with a fair bit of computer savvy. I have got plenty of time for indexing if needs be, but haven't the computer knowledge.

You are right Liz about the work. You cannot crosslink everything. I was trying to think of a way to minimise this, by just moving a small number of threads into a reference section. But even that involves someone making a decision as to what is worth keeping and what is not.

Perhaps a search facility would be a way. Some sites have this, which implies it is bundled in with some software - it is a pretty basic computer function these days.

p.s. whereabouts in Wiltshire are you? I lived at Compton Bassett from '91-'98 and loved it there.

Hi fifi, I like your avatar too, is it a begonia? I love fuschias and now I have a greenhouse [this is the first winter] they are easier to keep. I don't have much room inside my house. That one is 'Bella Rosella' , picture pinched from internet as I only have a mobile phone, doesn't do closeups very well, or maybe it's me- My elder daughter is Bella and she loves pink .
I live in Warminster. Must be a change for you in Scotland!
Back on topic, we already have the search facility, so what about having a permanent library, archive or garden FAQ section with its' own search? It would mean some arbitrary decisions at first but could be added to gradually.

I would love to create a completely separate area, but the best time for that to be done, would be on a change of software etc, as you have already said, it is a lot of work to do this very thing.

When I opened an Edible gardening section, it took about 3 evenings to sort out what should go to the appropriate place.

What you can do using the search facility, is look for compost (for example), then select the drop down display next to Search Forum, then choose a forum (for example, General Gardening Discussion), then change the Search In to 'Subject only' and not 'Entire Message'.

Using the above, you can substantially make the search easier for what you are looking for on the site.

I'm glad you have brought this to my attention, as I will do a new thread explaining the best way to use the search function.

I hope the above doesn't seem like I am teaching you to suck eggs though ;) .

Yes I like your avatar Liz - I saw it change as I was posting. I thought the Chinese had censored your old one :D :D :D

My apologies Nathan - I had forgotten there was a search facility. Much better to use what we have got.

Nathan, a thread explaining how to use 'search' would be an excellent idea, and much the simplest. [IMG]
