Maybe I'm just being stupid here but as a regular user can I ask these questions.
    Who pays for Gardeners Corner.
    How is it financed.
    Who is behind the idea.
What is it all about at whose expense.
How stupid am I not to know all this.
    With respect to everybody.
    Sincere in the questions.

by the looks of it a mix of banner advertising and user donation - everytime you click on a banner and buy somehting / sign up for something they will get money

might also be click and earn ad model too!

No, Its all paid for by a mixture of eastern european prostitutes and a big pay off from the fertiliser companies, advertising just wouldn't generate the kind of income to pay for a site of this quality.

    Of course you can!

Who pays for Gardeners Corner. How is it financed.

A little of the revenue comes from Google ads and we also have a donation scheme though sadly nobody ever seems to feel like donating. Other than that, the bulk of the costs are borne by the owner, Nathan.

Who is behind the idea. What is it all about at whose expense.

Our worthy benefactor and Webmaster, Nathan. He was looking for a place to find gardening info and realised there was nowhere to discuss. That was in December 2004. Then it was on a free DB but it eventually became apparent that the traffic had outstripped the capacity of it and we moved to vBulletin.

How stupid am I not to know all this.

    Sincere in the questions.

Not at all. In fact, there are very few members who have been here long enough to know GC's history.

At present we have 6,575 registered members and our best number of users online (members and guests) was 581 on 25/04/2008. We average about 10-20 new registrations every day! Yet unlike other message boards with similar numbers, we don't have hoards of moderators - we have just 2 admins and 4 mods! You all get along so well, you see? We hardly ever have any trouble. It's a great site and always has been but then we always seem to attract really great members! :gnthb:

I am a moderator on a small closed food forum. We all donate when the ads appear. It's about £8 but I don't know how many clicks that gives.
How much does it cost to finance a forum like this?

So...does clicking on the ads mean GC gets a bit more cash? Without a need for us to actually part with cash, just a click?

Nathan has done a brilliant job with the site :gnthb: and admin and moderators work very hard to keep this the best gardening site there is. Well done all of you :ntwrth: :ntwrth: :yho:

I don't think the newer members know much about being able to donate towards the cost of the site. They certainly don't know about why the link for 'donating to make ads go away' is there.

Originally there were no ads and Nathan brought in the ads to help pay for the site. A lot of the existing members didn't like the ads hence the link. I'm not sure that method works well because people quickly get used to ignoring the ads.

Maybe there could be an occasional request for contributions to assist towards the costs if the ads are not bringing in sufficient. The 'Become a site Supporter' link, does that.

My only problem is that I won't use paypal. I have a number of issues with that system where I have had to take legal action on behalf of other people.

Keep up the great work Webmaster - Nathan; Admin - Daisees and BananaMan; Moderators - jjordie, Marley, wiseoldowl and Paladin. :gnthb:. You all do a wonderful job :ntwrth: :ntwrth: :ntwrth:

Remember - if you need to contact any of them you can link to them through the FAQ page (and then 'Moderation Staff') at the bottom of the home page or, also at the bottom of the home page under 'currently active members' you can see which is on the board and click on their highlighted name.

Thank you to you and all the admins. You work very hard to keep the site just lovely. Everyone is so friendly.
Donating is a small price to pay for the information enjoyment and expertise you get from this forum. A night at the cinema would cost more

It means you have to donate £1,163.00 immediately, charly96. Or else a rampant patch of Japanese knotweed will mysteriously appear in your vege patch.
