Just had an email informing me it's shutting down, more BBC cost cutting maybe, I rarely visit the site these days, but a sign of the times I guess.

 

Nothing to do with the BBC, the magazine and website are owned and run by an independent media company, Immediate Media, who just licence the branding.

 

Why is it closing down ?

 

Because we were really,really naughty

We’re very sad to announce that the GardenersWorld.com Forum will be closing.

A need to focus on the development of new features, tools and services means we’re no longer able to support a forum on the site.

Here’s what to expect before the final closure:

Wednesday 20 March, 2024
The forum will close to new posts. Users will then have a further seven days of access to the private messaging service, to contact anybody they wish to stay in touch with.

Wednesday 27 March
The forum will finally close at noon and will no longer be accessible via GardenersWorld.com.

 

One door closes and another maybe opens, this is still quite a vibrant forum, some others seem to be struggling with low numbers, just a few loyal posters keeping them alive, but one wonders if the costs might out weigh the benefits and others may follow. It's not just gardening, some fishing forums are struggling too. facebook etc killing them off I guess.

 

Moneysavingexpert has a 'Greenfingered' board (Can't link. Too new here). If things don't work out here. Don't think they're ever going anywhere cause that site's massive and doesn't rely on ads. Not the same as a dedicated forum but they're amenable to sub-boards if a section gets big enough and seems to need it.

 

Donations are always welcome

 

Actually, I don't know how this forum is funded... Is there advertising? I have an ad blocker but can remove it from this site if that's desirable.

Another GW refugee seeking GC asylum!

New name and a fresh start.

I suspect that the GW forum is experiencing rising costs and low income from advertising revenue, brought about by reduced users thanks to farcebook and people using ad-blockers.
