Any tips please on when and how to plant cloves? I tried a couple of years ago and got perfect but tiny bulbs.

End of September to early November for me. You can start them in modules but I usually just plop them in rows with their tip just covered.
It's said they don't need great soil but I've found that I get better results with some rotted manure / compost dug in first. They do need good drainage

This was my first year of growing it, never liked garlic until now.:)

I just bought a spring planting variety, planted in 4in pots in March as the ground was not ready, planted out with a good root system in mid April.

Have had good results with very little attention.

I think the variety was "Christo"

I grew some from the Supermarket and they were great, but planted too late and were small - but still 5 cloves in most.

So, because i am not ready to put them straight into beds, as i have to get the beds put together and i have to dig the ground and am a bit slow at that, i am going to start mine in modules in the next couple of weeks and have bought some from the garden centre this time. First time for me doing this, so it will interesting!

First year for me doing this as well. I got some for a house moving present and am going to plant in Oct/Nov. I love garlic and use lots of it in cooking, so am hoping for good results. Can I ask what is module planting? Sorry to crash your thread mikermaber.

Trays with separate modules - when they grow plants in the trays they are Plugs . Not sure what they are called in the shops, but that what i would call them. :) Hope that helps, somebody else may be able to explain better.

I'm awaiting delivery of my order of 44 hardneck garlick bulbs from Really Garlicky Co. that should give me nearly 200 cloves to plant with about 50mm of soil over the top - these have big cloves, big bulbs and grow to about 4 feet tall. I chose that number to get my order over £35 and get free P&P. I've been growing these for quite a few years, but I think it's time for some new stock + fresh beds (raised to improve drainage as I've heavy clay soil) and these should keep me going for several more years of saving and replanting my own cloves.

Re-planting most of my elephant garlic cloves and a few packs of some different varities bought from a local garden centre were I get a discount will keep us self sufficient in garlic.

The late Geoffrey Smith always planted greengrocers garlic! - No fancy stuff for this bluff Yorkshireman!!

The old saying about planting time is "Plant on the shortest day, harvest on the longest"

We grew garlic this year and had a good harvest. The bulbs are a bit smaller than supermarket size and I put this down to a lack of water and light, so will try and increase both next season.

We planted last year in early Nov and harvested in August. We used just ordinary supermarket garlic and, although these don't produce heads as large as from the seed merchants, it is easily sufficient for us.

The heads are about 1.5" diameter (some a bit bigger and some a bit smaller) with really plump cloves. We bury them just below the surface and tend to do them in circles. This is because we don't bother to use veggie garden space but plant them in spare spaces in the flower beds. A circle of garlic stalks amongst the flowers looks OK :dbgrtmb:

What are the advantages of starting them off in modules?
